O.K., I can't contain myself. Like most of us, I can't help myself and always have to find a better way. This was the case when I decided to enlarge and upgrade my sump. I am picking up my new 38 x 20 x 16 tall sump tomorrow from Ultimate Acrylics. I'll be listing my used sump from AA (It's great too!), but after working with it for a while I decided to change my plumbing and reactor set-up to maximize my space and access.

The new sump is 1" shorter, but 4" deeper and 2" longer. I know it is controversial, but I will be doing a drain down chamber that will empty into a sock section with three 4" socks. It will progress to my reactor section, through a skimmer section and finally to the return pump section. I decided to do the back and all the interior sections, baffles, etc in White Acrylic!

To make it more interesting all my return (Positive pressure) PVC will be done in red. All returning lines will be done in a flat gray. I have everything laid out on my kitchen island, a table set up outside, and have all non-essential equipment out of my sump. So after my daughters soccer game tomorrow morning, I'll be swinging by to pick up the sump, get home, and get to work replacing the old sump!

I think I thought of everything? I drew out the design, have purchased all the PVC and parts, but just know at some point tomorrow I'll be cursing and mumbling to myself because I forgot something. Hopefully not! Anyway, wish me luck and I will post pictures tomorrow of the sump, my progress and the finished product!

Have a great night!

Sounds like you've got a great plan. Hope things go smoothly. I'll be following along. I've got a similar plumbing job planned for my tank build. Looking forward to the progress pics.

Ultimate ? I've never heard of them fairly new? Also what's controversial about what you described? Pros and cons? Sorry for all the questions. Also pics?

Photos! Actually made good time today. Had to run out to buy a 1 inch T after screwing up and a second trip for additional water (I'm out of salt) because I forgot to plan for the additional water volume. Pretty pleased with the results!

A couple of observations and things I'll need to do today.

1. The Fluval SP4 puts out some serious flow! Seriously, this thing is crazy strong, which makes me happy! This is probably in part that I used 1" as opposed to 3/4" all the way to the bulk head and then reduced. I branched each of my 3/4" loc lines so I could add flow in more directions. I think this will help.
2. I have a very, very minor leak at the threads of my gate valve, probably no more than a single drop every couple of hours. It drips directly into the sump so it is not a huge issue. I'll need to take that apart to figure it out, but should be something simple like redoing the Teflon tape... hopefully.
3. Need to get hooks or strapping to support the drains and return, although the return is supported by the bulkhead and at the pump, so not sure if support is "really" necessary.
4. Oh, bonehead move of the day? Stepping on my brand new lab grade pH probe and breaking it before even putting it in the tank!

Other than those items, I'm pleased after one day. But hey, I just spent a few hours yesterday doing all of this so I may just be proud of myself. We'll see how everything is going in a week, a month, and beyond. I've had a few PM's regarding the old sump and Jaebo 6000 pump. I'll be listing some equipment for sale including my old seaside ES2 skimmer for very good prices (Want to get them out my garage!), so look for the sale thread if you are interested.

Final step will be to skin the stand. This is something that I might like to tackle myself, but, time constraints and ability might be limiting. Any suggestions or folks on this site who do this type of work? Love to talk to you and get a quote.

Thanks everyone and have a great Sunday.

Nice setup! Im going to be running the fluval SP6 on my setup. Is that a union on the pump outlet? Where did you get it from? Also, where did you get your other unions and pvc fittings?
