Ok so let me see if I understand.
You want to see ammonia go up and back to zero at which time nitrite should go up and back to zero and then nitrate should go up. Once you see all three things happen the tank has cycled.

Of course the ammonia and nitrite should remain undectable while nitrate will show some.
Am I understanding this correctly?
you cant just check two you need all THREE to have a cycle not just two

Hmmm thats interesting. I wonder what causes it only in salt water. I wonder if it could be caused by lack of a food source. Maybe there was only trace amounts of ammonia being converted to nitrites and not enough for the nitrites being converted to feed a colony of nitirite eaters.

Nitrate being the most important basically the key, where you monitor ammonia and nitrite because of its toxicity that can kill and stop bacteria from growing if it reaches high enough levels so at high levels you do a water change and keep them in check if that happens

Notice I stated "and nitrates should go up" ;)
Of course I meant you should see nitrates.
In other words test for all three, once ammonia and nitrite goes up and back down, you should start seeing nitrates on your test. Once nitrates appear and IF ammonia and nitrites are still at zero your done, correct?
The key clue being the appearance of nitrate

or other microbes( live rock) are eating it but not the bacteria you want , so you don't ever get nitrate im not sure though

I see what your saying and I understand now... but tanks hardly ever have zero Nitrate but I get your point now. But I didn't mention nitrate so I understand.

Heheheh. Hes dazed and confused. maybe he should stop sniffing reef salt in the morning and try coffee instead.
;)

On a side note. I think Im gonna start a new thread on cycling a tank, and what to look for, what could happen etc. interested in sharing your expertise?

I do know there are a ton of other bacteria and microbes that live in Live Rock and Live sand but not sure how they play a factor in the scenario but im sure they do

Wow I really have a headache now! Haha.....so since initial setup I have tested once for ammonia and nitrites and will continue every other day until ammonia and nitrites test at zero, then I will start testing for nitrates. When everything settles at low numbers, the tank has completed its "cycle"? Correct? Am I missing anything? I plan on doing either a damsel or chromis for the first fish to be added to the tank.

I have never seen a new tank start out with nitrate , when you start to cycle the tank nitrate should be zero. not talking about when the tank is up and running/ stocked with livestock and you test and have nitrate but always in the beginning when you go to cycle your tank there never is nitrate

I just finished a nitrate test just to check it, and it's pretty high. Is it cause of my live rock and live sand?
