Hello from Tujunga...

I have kept FW fish in the long-ago past, mostly community tanks and some cichlids, but it's been a long time since I had a real setup and I have never had, but always wanted, a saltwater system.

A couple of days ago I picked up someone's used setup, a Biocube 29 with a Nanocustoms 5.6 LED retro. The stand was also completely packed with miscellaneous stuff like extra heaters, a full bag of reef salt, about 5# of completely dry/dead LR rubble (and there was about 30# of dry sand in the tank). It had been sitting for about 18 months but was fairly clean other than some old coralline on the back and a lot of sand/snail shells in the filtration chambers.

I did a tapwater/vinegar soak and then tapwater rinse of the tank and LR, which is sitting out in the sun now, and removed the tab between chambers 1 and 2 and the false floors in both. I'm waiting on an RO/DI system to arrive tomorrow along with some other stuff like a refractometer, extra circulation pump and extra water pump, and then Friday I should get the InTank Media Basket, Fuge Basket, Fish Guard, a fuge light, and filtration media. Once the RO/DI system gets here I'll start making enough water to rinse everything thoroughly before filling the tank with FW, draining it, and then finally filling it with saltwater. I'm really excited to do the final fill. Like, REALLY EXCITED. :p :clap2:

I don't have a plan for livestock yet and am not in too too much of a hurry; I'll probably putty a bunch of the LR rubble together first into something useful since I already have it, then buy the rest of the LR. Not sure yet if I should buy it online to keep costs down or get it locally so I can pick my own pieces instead of gambling. Hmmm...

Learning as I go along here but also trying to avoid too many early mistakes. :)

I should add that I heard about Socalireefs from the great people at SPS Corals, where I stopped in yesterday!

welcome!

we love pics here, so please post some pics to satisfy our appetite.. :p

we have some great sponsors and great members here, anything specific you want, just post up in the WTB (want to buy) section, and i'm sure you'll get plenty of responses.

29g isn't too big, i'm sure there will be some free liverocks sooner or later. someone's always breaking down or re-scaping, and will have leftovers.

another great opportunity, if you're up for a little drive, is the sidewalk sale going on this weekend at Marine Depot. the prices there will be hard / impossible to beat.

anyways, WELCOME!

Hey, someone told me you guys like pics?

I don't have too much that's interesting yet since the tank is empty, but...

Nanocustoms 5.6 LED kit - at least, I think this is the 5.6. It came with a Trio 700 3-channel controller.

All LEDs on - too bright to even look at. Taken looking up through the tank.

Cycling water/vinegar before cleaning.

Still a little dirty, waiting for final rinse in RO/DI.

LR rubble rinsed and baking outside.

An accident waiting to happen. :)

Thanks for all the welcomes. :) That Marine Depot sale is really tempting... if I'm ready to go by this weekend I may head down there!!

I will have lots of questions! Trying to research first, then ask. :)

My RO/DI is out for delivery so hopefully I can get started on the water soon. Unfortunately I found that my otherwise-clean 30-gallon trash can has holes in the bottom so I'll line it with a couple of trash bags and use it anyway overnight when I can't monitor. We have a handy grate in the yard that goes straight into a wash channel if it overflows.

I'm going to head to the Marine Depot sidewalk sale on Saturday morning and then to Long Beach to pick up Fiji cured rock for a deep discount on the way home from someone on CL. Gonna be a big day. :)

btw I have my heart set on a Mandarin... I've admired them since I was a kid, but I'll go slow and careful and make sure I get one that will eat something other than pods. I'm learning as much as I can in the meantime.

My tank is so small that I doubt I'll have enough pods to feed it, so it'll have to be a not-picky one. :)

I got the RO/DI system and... it's a piece of crap. It doesn't just leak from the fittings but right out of the top of the cannisters too even under low pressure. I guess I could teflon tape those too but at this point I think I'm done with it. Should have paid more attention to the reviews. :) I'll be calling SPS Coral when they open at 1 to get a quote on their system. :p

That sucks to hear about the ro system. I got lucky when I bought mine. I got the 180gpd spectrapure system from rainbow recurbished by spectrapure for $140. Ive added a 4 canister to it and recently changed the membranes, but the thing makes water like a champ.
By the way make sure you get a carbon block that will remove chloramimes. LADWP adds it to our water occasionally.

Yeah, our water smells like pool water sometimes doesn't it?

SPS's system is out of my price range, Vivid doesn't carry anything in stock and Rainbow only has RO systems in stock. Who knew that water could be such a problem? :)

Addit: I'm going to head to SPS and buy the water/jugs (I don't have enough of my own) from them so I can at least get past this hurdle. It'll have to be later when it cools off though, for the sake of my car coming up the hill on the way back!

Another Addit: SPS has been awesome through all of my annoying phone calls. SO nice!

+1. Sps is awesome. Always friendly and helpful. When you go bring your ro/di unit with you. Maybe they can tune it up while your there and get it working. Im guessing the fittings are all just loose

It's not just the fittings - it also pours right out of the tops of the cannisters even with low pressure. I tried teflon tape but after taping, testing, taking it apart, taping again, testing again, etc. I'm over it. I'm just about out of teflon tape too. :) I'm going to return it (it's a Coralife) to Amazon and either buy the refurbished Spectrapure 4-stage 90GPH or see how it goes and just buy the water going forward. My tank is so small I probably don't need a system, I just like not having to worry about running out of water or making regular trips to get more. Honestly, I only bought the Coralife because I could get it sooner with Prime shipping than if I had bought the Spectrapure system, so it's my fault for being impatient!

The tops of the canisters should have a large oring on the inside right above the threads.

Anyway , I hear ya on being impatient, I get the same way sometimes. Especially with new toys for my tank, I want it NOW, not next week, :)

Haha glad to know I am not alone. :) It just feels like it's taking *forever* to get past this first hurdle and I'm sure there will be many more to come.

I did check the o-rings and when tightening didn't stop the leaking, I backed the cannisters off just a little in case the pressure was tweaking the o-ring. No go. From the reviews I'm not alone so that's what I get for ordering it anyway.

Oh wow, I just went outside and it is brutally hot... my car is going to cry coming back up the hill with all that water. Too bad SPS isn't open in the morning when it's cooler. :)
