Hi, My name is Chris I have been into fresh water tanks for about 15 years and have recently got a 180g tank with a lot of stuff with it. the tank was a salt water tank and I know nothing about this hobby. I am very eger to get started. I live in Fountain Valley ( thats the center of Huntington Beach ) Is there anyone that could give me a call so I could tell you what I got and tell me what I need to get started. Thanks,

Chris Henry @ 562-900-1644

welcome and good luck.

A search and lots of reading are in you near future; this question has already been asked... many times, you should be able to get enough info to ask more specific questions.

FYI,
Tank, protein skimmer, live rock, heater, test kits, clean RO water, salt, and time should get you going but a sump, fuge, circulation, live sand, chiller, and additives are all recommended

I'll let you know now. There are a lot of people on here dont know JACK-ISHhhh and will try and give you advice. Best bet is to do a lot of research. Buy some recent books, not the outdated book that where made 30 yrs ago. Go to Fish stores that have been in business for many years. They tend to know what works and what is a fad or a gimmick.
Also make sure you buy your fish and and coral from clean fish stores, and buy tank raised as much as possible (SAVE OUR REEFS).

Good luck. And dont take someones word for it, do your own research.

while I agree with most of what Detane said, I would caution you about putting too much trust into what you will be told at fish stores. Some will indeed give good advise, but there are many stores that are just interested in selling you something, and it will usually be whatever they make the most profit from.
As Detane said, do your research.

You should just go ahead and list what equipment that you do have, I am sure there will be good advise as to what you have that is good, and what other things you may need.

FWIW I think you are close to some very good stores there in FV, but you are also close to at least 1 store that gets quite a bit of negative things said about it. So, go look at all of them, and do your homework with the research.

Remember, nothing good happens with these reef tanks quickly.

Good luck.

Welcome, +2 on what Detane said...I just recently go into this hobby and first it costs a lot of money!!!! I bought 4-5 books off of amazon and I use those as reference and also I come to the forums to get great advice from some people that know what they're doing. But do your research, lots of it online.

I dont know, there are alot of well experienced reefers here, and there is nothing better then getting advice from someone that had a bad experience with something and learn from their mistakes, If DETANE thinks that way, then why are you here, just to sell stuff? Do a build thread? I have learned alot from forums and made a lot of good friends.

One thing that is a fact; Research, research, research!

+1 on the research.

There are many well experienced reefers here that can help you out. if any information is given to you on this board that is wrong, there will be someone out there to refute it and point you in the right direction. i suggest listing the equipment you have now so we can point you in the right direction.

btw, i only trust 1 or 2 fish stores with the information they give me. i usually come to the boards for valuable info or recomendations

goodluck!

another thing about this hobby for some reason it's all about luck... lol... i have a friend that has a large lionfish and a bunch of seahorses in his 230G reef for a couple of years now... that doesn't make sense to me, and tottally trips me out, but i've seen it with my own eyes...

also... some stuff just doesn't come out as planned... for some reason i can't keep leathers (a type of soft coral) in my tank long term... or the ones that do live, never grow... but in my friend's tank, leathers grow insane fast... we have almost the same setup, use the same salt/ro mix... it just doesn't make sense to me...

also... lol... what works for some might not work well for others... just like how people can't have a certain fish, or a certain fish fights with another fish, or hardy fish might not be hardy in your tank... my sixline wrasse leaves my mandarin goby alone as when my buddy got a sixline it killed his mandarin...

one time an engineer goby ate a maxima clam out of nowhere... they were in the tank for a wile... one day he just started munching mantile...

i don't know if it really is luck... but it just doesn't make sense... some chemicals work for some, not for all... every tank is different... so everyone's experience is also different...

and usually people here that answer your questions know what they are talking about... why would someone pretend to know the answer and post a bogus answer... plus... they will be corrected right away...

it pays to travel and be picky about your local fish store...

good luck, and ask tons of questions... also use the search function... chances are someone has all ready asked your questions and there is an answer posted...
