my middle school teacher had macaws, cockatoo's, giant snakes and tarantulas in her classroom... a reef would've made it over the TOP!...

There are a ton of reefers in corona riverside area who might donate alot of stuff to a classroom. Plus you might be able to talk your school into giving the person that donates alot of money worth of stuff a tax rightoff? Isnt there something you get for donating money to the school?

Yes, I'm the one from Reef Centeral. It was recommended that I post here as well.

I'm a 5th grade teacher @ Highland elementary in the Corona Norco district. The plan was to convert an existing fresh water 55 to a reef. However due to a great response from locals willing to donate....the project seems to be getting bigger and better by the moment.

The Principal is completly on board and going to allow me to modify the counter in the back of my room to accomidate whatever system I end up with. (probably going to need a little knowhow help there)

Ultimatly I'll be teaching 5th grade science standards to 100+ students using the tank whenever possible. I also intend to run a before/after or lunch "Young Reefers" club (have to work on that name though, parents may not like it :))

Hi guys,
I recommended that ekbds123 move his thread to this forum.
welcome to SoCaliReefs!

ekbds123 wants to setup a class room reef tank for his 5th grade class and was asking for advice and perhaps some basic equipment donations. As most of you know, we organize the MAX show with a heavy priority around involving the families and children. There is a very specific reason for this, part of which involves helping to sustain the future of this hobby by involving more kids at an earlier age. Obviously there is an inherent commonality between what we are trying to accomplish (indirectly) and what teachers can do directly via the class room. As such, we have chosen to be a significant sponsor of equipment and materials for this endeavor.

If anyone happens to have a good, solid 4-foot reef ready tank available (with built-in overflow), please consider donating it to ekbds123. As was mentioned in the RC thread, we are committing to providing a sump, plumbing, new PC and MH bulbs, food, supplements, and a host of other gear IF we can find a suitable tank available.

I don't want to sound like a 48" tank isn't enough, Anything would be greatly appriciated! Just wanted to say length is not an issue. The counter where it will be placed is 7' long 2' wide. Boss says I can drill it and brace-it for any size tank we want.

I feel so bad.....! I have a 60" x 30" x 24" rimless tank sitting in my garage! Already drilled for overflow...However, both side pieces of glass are cracked as I had the tank moved by movers! BAD IDEA!

Cool deal, that opens up alot more possibilitie. 4', 5', or 6' tank would all do nicely, however as a rule of thumb, the greater the water capacity, the more stable your tank is likely to be (ie: less vulnerable to fluctuations). There are two concerns to be aware of:

1) Saltwater is approximately 8.5 lbs. per gallon not counting the weight of tank, liverock, and equipment. Assuming a net of 10 lbs. per gallon tank is a good conservative figure. A 220 gallon tank can easily exceed a full TON in some cases. The point I'm trying to make is that if it were me, I'd build that cabinet as if you were supporting a medium-size circus elephant.....or perhaps a dancing pink one :elefant:

2) Consider ease of viewing and ease of serviceability if you wish to have the children involved. This may involve a lower-than-normal height stand (24" to 30" tops) and/or a relatively shallow tank...definitely no taller than 24", perferably 20" or so
