Had this nyos skimmer for about 6 months. Recently every time I turn it off for feeding the skimmer turns back on but it doesn’t start bubbling until I raise the skimmer outside the water to prime it’s self then it works perfectly. Annoying that I have to raise it out of the water every time I need to feed. Has anyone ever ran into this ? Also anyone have a suggestion for a replacement skimmer. It’s currently a nyos 160 and it’s inside a waterbox 130 sump

The Venturi needs to be cleaned. I can bet there is a salt blockage in the air line right where the air meets the water.

Mine does that and apparently it’s a common thing. There is a fix which is to take it apart and clean it. But that only last for a couple weeks then goes back not starting up.

I find it easier to use the spare hose that it came with to blow air on the air intake tube to get it started. beats pulling the skimmer out every time.

The skimmer works great and it’s quiet. It sucks that it’s a high dollar item and doesn’t work like it should.

Thanks I’ll try soaking all of it including the air line in citric acid maybe that fixed it

I had to use a tiny little screw driver to break the calcified salt ball that got stuck in my skimmers Venturi and this was only after I soaked the skimmer in vinegar water for a day.

Ya i was doing research and found it’s pretty common. I’m just going to replace it. Don’t want to lift or blow everyday lol

Anyone have suggestions on skimmers. I heard the Red Sea skimmers are pretty nice

Yes, replace it as this is a known issue and they’re not going to change anything. I replaced mine with a Deltec and absolutely love it.

So let me ask you people that has owned this skimmer is it a buildup of salt in the Venturi like I’m thinking?

I just took mine apart for a deep cleaning this weekend, I checked the Venturi and it was clean . One flaw I found real quick was the screw to adjust airflow was very loose and over time will work itself closed.I was able to fix that with a little Teflon.

Just from what I see, I think when the skimmer shuts off the water goes through the ventury high up in the air hose line, and when we start it back up the pump doesn’t have enough kick to pull that back out. Maybe some kind of air lock ?

Because I easily get it back started by blowing air with spare hose in the air intake.

Not a huge problem for people like me that don’t usually turn off skimmer but for the price I paid for it this thing should have zero flaws.

It's actually the pump being under-powered and unable to self-prime after start up. Buildup in the intake doesn't help, but the major issue is pump size. I think the pump loses power over time, probably due to loss in the magnet/impeller. I really liked this skimmer in the beginning, but there are too many parts on this skimmer and cleaning it is a MF. Maybe if they retrofitted them with dc pumps, it would change? I love my Deltec for it's simplicity and the fact that it came with a manual neck cleaner, which most skimmers don't. Also, I love that I can tune the dc pump if I'm on the low side of N&P and can still skim without stripping too much from the water and still provide O2.

Thanks Hugo and Drexel. That makes sense.

So I know I get salt creep in the Venturi airline of my skimmer. If I let the skimmer run non stop for more then a money it starts to suffocate. I stopped this by turning off my skimmer for an hour a day when I was running a skimmer.

Maybe nyos just made the water inlet hole to large so that the pump can’t generate the vacuum it needs to draw the head pressure of the airline tubing. Maybe someone with a 3d printer could make a new Venturi adapter that has a slightly small opening for the water so the pump could create the vacuum pressure it needs to draw the water out of the air tubing.

So I have a similar story. I have an iTech200 skimmer this skimmer was hand made by Itchyman out of Florida. But the skimmer originally was made to work with the tunze hyperfoamer. But after I went through 3 tunze motor blocks in 5y cause the cord spilt at the block. I had enough with tunze. The last one that split caused a Neptune DC8 to fry. So I modified the skimmer to run a skimz dc pump. That pump has been running the skimmer for 6 or so years now. Idk if the nyos can be modified but I’m truly happy with the mod I did. That dc pump works so well with that skimmer body that it over skims my system

So update. I took it apart and cleaned it. Soaked it and same thing happened. What I notice is when the skimmer is off water goes up the hose and the pump is not strong enough to push it out until you blow on it or lift it. For it being so expensive and premium it really sucks.

Put your suggestions of skimmers. Or if any of you have a good one for sale

Look for a dc pump skimmer that doesn't have a lot of moving parts, manual neck cleaner and has a simple design. I love my Deltec, but there are others out there. What size tank and bio-load?
