I wanted to throw a trochus in the fuge in the new tank and was using tongs to get one off the rocks in the old tank... I pulled his shell right off. I feel terrible. :( Why didn't he let go?!?!

That is/was a very powerful pull :)
They normally let go of the rock/glass before the shell is separated. When I bought the snails from Carson Tropical fish, the owner used the same technique. However, he did twist the shells a bit and all of them let go.....

Yeah, I've moved snails lots before! I pulled a little, wiggled a little, did all the usual stuff... never did it with tongs before though and never will again, too hard to gauge the force. The worst part is he just sat there without his shell for like 2 hours before I went to bed. I could barely look in the tank, I felt so bad. If nothing finished him off overnight and he's still sitting there looking at me without his shell I might freak out a little.

His buddy musta been watching though, as soon as I grabbed him (by hand) he let go. He knew what was good for him.

normally its best to gradually twist and pull with slowly increasing force...never a good idea to treat it like a table cloth and yank it off without moving the dining ware lmao only kidding

Haha, I know... I've never had a snail hang on like that, I was working on him for like a minute trying to get him to let go. I think using the tongs made it seem like I was using less force than I actually was. Lesson learned, the next guy got taken out by hand and he came right off. :p
