Old sand

Hi guys, I started cleaning out the sand from my old tank to put into my fuge. I had it sitting in a plastic tote. I cleaned out the top layer on the tote, about 2". After digging in some more a really foul odor started coming out, plus the sand is a different color, like a bluish/black. Is that normal? Can I still use it after I clean it of course?

thats all that nasty stuff ur sand bed took in. i think if u wash it a few times u can reuse it, thats what i did for my nano and its still good. but just wait a lil longer for a pro to tell u

The sand was in my old system about a year and a couple of months.

you should be able to use it after a good wash
