My pearly jawfish i've had for 1 year has stopped eating for about 3 weeks now. it sort of looks interested in the food, lunges at the food once or twice, but never eats. If he does actually open his mouth he misses the food a lot. I've tried homemade mixed fish food, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and pellets. Out of all those foods he will actually eat the pellet (when he gets it in his mouth), but spits it out within 1 second. I've tried all soaked in selcon too.

All the other fish have been eating fine. Pink streaked wrasse, helfrichi firefish, photon clownfish, and a shrimp with a ton of snails are the other tank inhabitants. shrimp is a little too aggressive at times so I try to scare it away. no signs of ich on any of the fish. they were all quantined and the last fish i put in was in january.

I saw that there were 2 big 4-6 inch bristleworms in his burrow so I trapped those and removed them from the tank about 1.5 weeks ago. i thought they might be stressing it out

the only changes to that part of the tank at that time was that I was giving the jawfish more rubble to build it's home. some pieces were a little sharp, but I have tried to remove those sharp pieces as well. i ended up knocking down it's house, but that about 1 week ago as a result. i'm sure that didn't help.

this jawfish did this a few months ago then just started to miraculously eat after going on hunger strike for 3 weeks last time. i'm just so confused.

any thoughts?

i think his eyes were clear, i will check again when i get home tonight. i've been feeding new life spectrum 1mm pellets. the jawfish is about 3 inches long. it's always loved the pellets the most. decent sized guy.

Try PE mysis, for some reason fish love that mysis the most in my experience. You can also try LRS. Some fish are just finicky and want something different. You add garlic to their food?

i actually went out and found my old post in january. after that first episode it started to eat normally. however, during this hunger strike the jawfish just really doesn't leave it's burrow at all. just stares at the food as it drops, maybe feels like a lunge once or twice... that's it. all the other fish are getting super well fed as a result of my overfeeding... haha.

just got home, it's a little too late, but I'll check him out in the morning.

lol other than me harassing him not really. maybe the shrimp scares the jawfish because of all that food spray down there the shrimp comes looking for a meal. shrimp is pretty big now as a result.

I checked this morning and his eyes seem clear and were darting around to follow things in the tank. I did see him try to eat something before I actually started to feed.

I forgot to mention that when he eats a pellet he kind of looks like he's chewing. Then he spits it out. This morning he ate a pellet and then spit out half of it and that was all he ate.

I wonder if he got like a mouth infection while defending its burrow against those bristle worms, they use their mouths when trying to scare predators

Yea I did think about that. I checked his mouth and couldn't immediately see anything. I hope he recovers. I do notice a tiny bit of sunken belly.

There should not be more worms in his home for now.
