SCE just delivered a notice that we have a planned power outage in our area between 11pm and 6am on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning of next week. I'm gone that night on a business trip!! Since I won't be there, does anyone have any recommendations on how to best keep everything alive?

According to my apex log my heaters haven't turned on in like 3 weeks (no A/C here) so I'm not terribly concerned about that, but I do know I need to keep circulation going to keep oxygen transfer up. I could buy a Vortech battery backup but that thing is $165 and would need to rush ship it here to get it installed this week.

Also, I have no idea if power is going to be coming on or off or if it will even be off the full 7 hours (I assume they leave themselves some wiggle room) but if anyone has any anecdotal experience that would be awesome too.

Thanks everyone.

Couple battery powered air pumps would do.

Or costco sells those office back up battery
+1 on battery air pumps...We had our scheduled outage today, my battery backup kicked on one mp40 for about 1.5 hours before going dead...luckily I was around to notice

went to home depot and bought a 5000w generator, other than going deaf from how loud it was, everything was ok

+1 computer battery backup 1 of mp40, get the biggest one. you might find you already have one around the house or office, and after you buy one you might return it if its not right for you.

Thanks guys it sounds like the battery powered air pump is the way to go for the price. Does anyone know of one that only runs when the power is off?

I have a few of these, pretty cool batt air pumps.

I also have generators, vortech battery backups, and the UPS battery backups, but those are for more long-term outages. You'll probably be okay with just some air bubblers as people mentioned above. Not sure how handy you are, or if you're interested, but If you ever wanted to, you could also build your own vortech battery backup for about 1/3 of what they retail for.

I remember seeing a thread about that on reef central I think... its definitely something I would be willing to do because I'm somewhat electrically handy but I dont think I have time to dl it before the shut off. Do you have a link to an article or any other information? thank you!

I'll try to find you a few links. If you Google DIY vortecheck battery backup, you should see quite a few threads, as well as a YouTube video iirc.

As far as just getting one air pump, I think it'll depend on the amount/size of fish you have.. I believe larger fish require more oxygen.. but for a 40 breeder, I'd guess you'd be good with one.

+1. I've used two for my 100 gallon so I would think you'd be okay with one for your 40.

Guys, just wanted to thank you for your advice. I installed the Silent Air B-11 ("silent air" being a complete misnomer but otherwise does the job as advertised) and went on my trip. I flew back a day early and got home last night 5 hours into the power outage to find that the pump was working as it was supposed to. This morning everyone seems happy and healthy. Thanks for your advice and being such good folks.
