no personal experience, but a very difficult fish to keep, ick magnets, needs a very big system. 40 would be too small, IMO. It would stress itself out from ick in no time...

They are known for scavenging algae off the reef. They need a pretty large tank with a good amount of swimming room. Like all tangs they are very active swimmers and like to cruise in flow. They are one of the most territorial fish on the reef and have a tendency to bully other tangs and fish in general. They are very very cool fish to watch as they are so active and can be a nice addition to a captive reef if the conditions are right. They like the hippo tang can get ick very fast due to stress. I do have to say that a friend of mine had a power blue in a 55g corner bow tank for about two years, but I will also say that he did not have very many other fish and a good amount of flow and so forth. Other than that GOOD LUCK!!!

Just to piggy back off of what everyone else is saying. Definitely an ich magnet and even if you qt there is still a high possibility of it still getting it. A fish that you want to be your very last addition because it is so territorial and even then it could start bullying other fish in your system. The larger the system the greater the chance of success. A very beautiful fish and I would like to wish you luck with whatever you decide.

i have a pbt and it does bully my ybbt but my ost keeps him on check. it does graze a lot. ick not so much for my fish. i bought it from a fellow reefer who had it for a while. i have it for over a yr now. my recommendation is wait for a local reefer to sell a healthy one then buy it. bought one from the fish store and died in a week.

Had a PBT for 4 years. As it grew it had a few boughts of ich, but nothing good food and water conditions couldnt cure. Many academic places consider ich an opportunisitc disease, not certain death.

Anyway, my poweder blue grew to 5 inches, then I gave him a way. He was just too aggressive. In 75g he bullied to death a powder brown, then in a 180 he bullied to death a clown tang, achilles tang, and moorish idol. I had that idol for 2.5 years and when he died I had to get rid of the PBT. After that a blonde naso that he bullied finally starved to death.

I kind of wish the tang police beat some sense into me before. But PBT was a such a beautiful fish.

Now that PBT is gone the other fish are a lot happier.

Thanks for all the help, although I don't agree with all of it. I am not very worried about the Ich, because everybody was telling me I was going to kill my tank by adding my Blue Hippo Tang with out quarantining or dipping it. However I am definitely going to dip this Tang. I am a firm believer that if you get a healthy fish to start out with and feed it well and keep parameters in check that it will continue to stay healthy as long as the tang is small enough for the tank.

The thing that made me want one was that I saw a very small one that was watching me at a store. I won't say which one because I don't want someone to get it.

The only thing I am worried about is it bullying my other tangs. I have a Blue Hippo Tang and a Yellow Tang.

why would you do that to the fish intentionally? Although you don't agree with the advice, 3 tangs in a 40 gallon is just asking for future problems. It may not be immediate, it may take time, but everyone always says they will upgrade tanks at some point or re-home the fish but what is the point of that?

Also, tangs are big eaters and eat all day, thus POOP a lot. Your filtration may also become an issue as they grow, not only will the tank be too small.

Cleaner shrimps wont help with ick.

Well I am still considering the Powder Blue Tang, but I am thinking maybe a pair of Coral Beauties. What do you guys/gals think about the Coral Beauties?

2 dwarf angels in a 40g will most likely kill each other unless you can get ones that are already a pair, which I have yet to see for sale anywhere. I am not saying that you might not find them its just I have never seen them for sale.
