Powerhead in sump?!?

Any one run powerheads in sump ? Does it make a difference ? What size pump ?

Yea, a lot of us do from what I know. I have mine set up via apex to turn on and off throughout the day, the more waste suspended the better it is for the skimmer.

Power head for what reason? There's usually a ton of settled junk. If you blow it it'll get super messy but I assume eventually it'll prevent so much build up. But I think the faster flow might cause bubbles to be returned I to your display

I just use a turkey baster to either siphon out the junk or blow it out for skimming.

yea initially you may make a mess i just had my return off for an hour and had the whole area cleaned up pretty quick. Having a pump on full time or turning on periodically will deff make a difference. Iv never had bubbles return to my dt but i have a huge sump and the skimmer is far from the return pump. aGoodluck keep us posted!!!

I wouldn't add a pump. It will clear your sump but just find another place to settle. I rather it settle in my sump to be siphoned out than in my display under a rock i can't get to.

I run a spare koralia in my 180 gal sump. Keeps everything clean for sock and skimmer to pickup

I have a power head in every section of my sump. I started my tank like this so no detritus ever settled.

I also use another power head at an angle to tumble my chaeto.

Increases flow and light consumption which in turn allows for better more efficient waste removal.

This. If your sump is more turbulent than your display tank, guess where the detritus is going to settle out.

That's a yes to prevent build up. But there will always be deadspots. You gotta do both in my opinion.

My spot for lower flow is in my overflow box which is fine, I just pull an overflow tube one at a time and it cleans into the corresponding filter sock. And then it's all clean

Dang dude! What are the specs to your system? What kind of skimmer and bioload you running? I never had much chaeto production when I ran it, but my bioload wasn't as large as it is now. Plus, I was using biopellets. Not sure if that made a difference.

I'm running the SCA 50 cube, stock skimmer, no reactors and no dosing.
I have a mix of corals mainly softies and LPS.
5 medium fish, that I feed heavily.
I stick to a bi-weekly water change schedule, using a 6 stage BRS RO/DI with IO regular salt.


I'll get a quick FTS...
No Blues.
