I used one small box of regular baking soda. Neutralized? Who knows. Added the box, stirred it around, down the gutter it when. A month later, my corals are looking great.

Hahaha. Sounds all nonchalant.

But...

People use muriatic acid all the time to clean their driveways and wash it down. I didn't test the ph but the acid is being neutralized by the calcium it's eating off the rocks anyway.

I followed Flys writeup along with bleaching rock first. Make sure you rinse well between bleach and muriatic acid !

I've been following fly's advice too on this, Costco has some arm and hammer baking soda, 13.5lbs for like $5.50. I've yet to mine. Waiting till about a month before the tank is ready to acid bath.

I also went with the EMarco cement. $49.99 for 10lb kit. Heard some wonderous things about this stuff...like gravity defying matrix stuff.....

Personally, after reading on different ways to do this, acid does seem to give me an piece of mind, cheapest too. Is that grave to shallow? What if it floats back up? You sure your dogs can eat that much? Acid? Yeah I'm good.

baking soda does neutralize acid, it works on bad car batteries that have cracked and leaked .....I use to be a chef and they use it in the industry in baking for chemical reactions such as helping bread and cakes to rise, just like baking soda so it is a scientific fact that baking soda neutralizes acids....

+1 on this.

In college, we used baking soda to neutralize the acid whenever there was an acid spill or accident. We used it with all acids including HCl, hydrochloric acid.

I dont think the question ever was "does baking side neutralize acid" it was "how much baking powder do i need to neutralize acid" fly said he used 1small box over gallon. As for fully neutralized? Unless you wanna buy a pH testing kit its a guess.

True. Didn't read the OP lol.

The more the better.

If you want to go into the calculations, get the molarity and the volume of acid you're using then use those numbers to find out how much sodium bicarbonate to use to completely neutralize the acid. You also need to make a stock solution of sodium bicarbonate. I'd choose 1.5 Molarity of sodium bicarbonate.

Maybe m1v1=m2v2 is a good equation to start off with.

You have molarity of 1 (acid) and molarity of 2 (sodium bicarbonate solution), u just need to figure out the volume of v2 (sodium bicarbonate solution) to use which is dependent on Volume 1 (acid used)

If it wasn't for the chemist in me, I'd just get 3 huge boxes of Arm and Hammer and toss it all in your bath. Maybe even a 4th box.

Well, I did it. I don't know if I did it right because after I neutralized the acid and dumped the rocks, I had to rinse crud off the rock with the hose. Like, the acid didn't eat it all away. Is this normal?

I've added plenty of Aquamaxx dried rock from marine depot and only soaked/rinsed in RoDi water.
Never had any issues with phosphates or leaching...
