Is there any concern with putting a high wattage heater in the sump? Would the heater heat up the much smaller amount of water too quickly that it will be too hot or would the high return rate of the water make this a non-issue?

I have 2 heaters, a 300w and a 400w but will only be using one or the other.

The high return rate makes this a non-issue. I have 2x250w heaters in my sump, no issues. I think most everybody with a sump keeps their heaters there.

If you can afford it, I would suggest getting two smaller heaters... that way if one fails you will still have some heat.

So if you are going to use the 400w, I would do 2x200w instead.

Make sure you have your heater plugged into some type of controller. Never trust a heater, if they get stuck on the ON position then all your livestock is done for. My reefkeeper lite was the best investment ever, I don't have to worry about my heater going crazy on me ever again.
