PVC, to prime or not to prime, that is the question.

I never use primer. Only time i used primer was on my first plumbed tank way back when. Because it was recommended to me at home depot. Lol. But never used again because it was too messy and felt the glue was more than enough

Nice testing.

I was told long ago to only use primer when gluing different plastics. Like PVC to ABS.

Then I found out about the code and wondered about all those unprimered joints out there that are working just fine...

I always thought if it was clean, no primer needed. Especially on the drain, i dont see too much stress on the joints- the leak is gonna come from threaded bulkheads. On the pump side, might be more critical. I was under the impression our hobby pumps produce relatively low pressure since they pump into open systems. That might change if there is an obstruction in the pipe?

I don't usually use primer my self, but I do use a PVC beveling tool on the ends of each piece of pipe that way the glue has a chance of covering the entire joint.

I only prime fittings and quarter inch of the pipe to avoid seeing purple, but I have just sanded before and it works

That was very interesting indeed. Learned something new today..
No more messy purple stains on my plumbing.
