For those that have a separate quarantine tank for new fish, how long do you keep the fish in QT? What treatment are you using for the fishes? Do you rinse them in RO water or saltwater before they go in the display after being in the qt tank?

I also want to know if running SeaChem Cupermine and Praprizpro is a a good idea or should I just do one or the other?

I'd like to see what methods you guys use for qt'ing new fish for your tank.

Thanks in advance! :)

A lot of time people just run a qt to make sure that the fish is eating before it goes in the display and makes it easier to catch if it needs to be medicated. Most of the time they will have the qt running and if it needs to be medicated set up a seperate hospital tank.

Thank you for the reply!

My QT Tank is my hospital tank! I use CopperSafe, and leave my fish in for 30 days!
Thanks for the response! When the QT phase is over,do you change out all the water or run carbon in the qt tank or do you leave it up and running til whenever you get another new fish with the CopperSafe in the water?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm trying to set up my qt tank properly and go about the qt process the right way so any advice is appreciated!:)

Any more responses from anyone else?

We have a 20gal QT running with a plastic rock, a small chunk of LR and a HOB skimmer. We are leaving new fish in for 4 weeks. But we are also just changing about 1-2 gal per day, taking QT water out, putting in display tank water. Keeping it clean.

We also have a separate Hospital tank, only if needed. For the Hospital tank, we have Herbtana available. The Hospital tank is not always running, but we have about 40-50gal of fresh saltwater ready at all times, in case we needed it.

Also, we are dipping in fresh water before the fish goes into the QT, and feeding a lot in QT. We also have the lights set on the same schedule as the DT, and the food is the same too.

For sure good luck with the set up.

I make it easy, I do 20% water change monthly, because some times I have no fish in there, so no fish no poo no need! And Coppersafe depletes after one month also.

I just use my old 30 gallon setup for QT. I usually keep fish for 30 days or so to observe and make sure they feed. Luckily I haven't had problems with ich or any fish diseases so I haven't had to medicate.

I prefer to quarantine when I can, but if not, then I at least dip Formalin when acclimating.

When I have quarantined, It's been for 3 to 4 weeks before being introduced to the main display. Once introduced I usually feed heavier than usual for the next week to make sure everything gets plenty to eat.

Is QT really a good idea?

Intuitively it seems a good safeguard.

There is actually controversy on how effective QT is, for the new fish and for the other fish in the display.

I wish there was an actual study with data on effectiveness. Everything is based on "common sense" reasoning, expert experience/advice or anecdotal evidence. If you are scientifically inclined, in the evidence-based world, recommendations based on these data category is close to a 50-50 call (almost random chance).

When this was brought up on other forums, the person who dared suggest there was no proof QT worked was flamed out of the forum, in a nasty way.

Since "proper" QT is time consuming, expensive and varies with each species of fish, can someone reply with a study...
