I have a 48" Coralife Elite Fixture that has 2 x 250w MHs in it.

I currently am running the standard magnetic ballasts that came with it but im looking into possibly getting better ballasts. I dont want to change wiring and stuff just a new set of ballasts. I briefly looked online and wasnt finding anything. Anyone got experience with this?

the ballast is outside try electronic but you'll have to rewire the connection to the right configuration, there will be iether 6 or 5 wire if its in 1 main cable or 3 wire each cable if 2 goes to the ballast, picture would be nice

Coming out of the fixture theres 4 wires (fan, actinic, MH1, MH2) inside the fixture the wires are accessible though. I dont know a lot about the difference between the two (electronic vs magnetic) is it worth the mod really without modifying the entire fixture.

Your not going to mess with the fixture you will just simply follow the wiring direction at the end of the wire that will connect to the MH Ballast.

Thanks Travis. Is there any kind of difference in performance going Electric instead or the Par?

I found this little article,

Electronic high-frequency ballasts increase lamp-ballast efficacy, leading to increased energy efficiency and lower operating costs. Electronic ballasts operate lamps using electronic switching power supply circuits. Electronic ballasts take incoming 60 Hz power (120 or 277 volts) and convert it to high-frequency AC (usually 20 to 40 kHz). Electronic ballasts are more efficient than magnetic ballasts in converting input power to the proper lamp power, and their operating of fluorescent lamps at higher frequencies reduces end losses, resulting in an overall lamp-ballast system efficacy increase of 15% to 20%.

Electronic ballasts have a number of other advantages over magnetic ballasts. Electronic ballasts are readily available that operate three or four lamps, allowing the use of a single ballast in 3-lamp and 4-lamp luminaires. This reduces both installation and field wiring labor costs, and may negate the necessity of tandem luminaire wiring as required by the 1992 Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential and Nonresidential Buildings (Title 24). Electronic ballasts are designed to operate lamps in either series or parallel mode. The advantage of the parallel mode of operation is that a single lamp failure will not affect the operation of the remaining lamps controlled by the same ballast. However, ballast losses will increase slightly in the parallel mode. Other advantages of the electronic ballast include reduced weight, quieter operation, and reduced lamp flicker. Electronic ballasts are directly interchangeable with magnetic ballasts, and they are available to operate most full-size and compact fluorescent lamps.

Cool so the primary thing i got from that was just power efficiency

not just power efficiency but longger bulb life if you bulb normally looses its brightness at 8 month it will at a few more or longer due to magnetic ballast tend to overdrive the bulb.

so the cables from the halides i have are hardwired from the fixture to a female end plug that goes into my ballast. To make it work on the electronic ballasts is there an adapter to make it wire into the electronic ballast without modifying my original cables? I looking at something like this:
http://www.marinedepot.com/IceCap_E...Ballasts-IceCap-IC3111-FILTACBAMHSWEB-vi.html (gotta change it to the 250w model)

I have the exact same fixture. I am going to replace the two ballasts with one lumatek e-ballast and one Galaxy e-ballast. I am thinking of cutting the female end plug and make it a male plug. On the e-ballast, I will make a female recepticle.
The reason for 2 diffferent ballasts is to compare which one is better. I am using the Radium 20K 250W bulbs on my fixture right now.
I will let you know how it goes and post some pictures when it is done. I already got the Lumatek and am still looking for a good deal on the Galaxy.

Sounds good id love to see how it goes. I saw a dual ballast Lumatek also if it ends up being the better, got really good reviews. Im just trying to avoid splicing my wires for resale purposes. But im sure i can get some connectors then mod those.

I took your advice and double checked the MH cable from the fixture. The plug is a male that goes into the female end of the boxed ballast (not the female).
Here what I can do:
Using this
http://www.premiumaquatics.com/aquatic-supplies/ICE-WHQD-F.html
I can make it like a quick disconnect on the Lumatek ballast. Then just plug the MH cable from the fixture into it. My Lumatek comes with a bare wire, so I just have to connect it. No splicing or cutting at all.
Seems easy enough. I hope Home Depot has it for sale. I will let you know.

Krazy, do you already have both the new ballasts? If not why not an Icecap instead of one of the others? Im excited to see some results

Hows it coming along Krazy? Im pretty much set on getting two Icecaps at this point. I have 14k Hamiltons right now but when they are done ill probably get some Ushio bulbs. I heard they work really well with that combo

Shipment hasn't arrived yet (holiday weekend). I stayed away from the Icecaps because of mixed reviewed. So far, everyone I know who has Radium and Galaxy/Lumatek setups is very happy with what they got so I will go that way. Down the road or when I come across a good deal on Icecap, I will give it a try.
Sorry but I heard bad colors on the Hamilton 14K as well.
