So i just recently lowered my lights by 2 inches closer to the water, cheap LED's i have some corals now that are starting to get brownish algae on the tips, could this be from bringing the lights down 2 inches. they still have polyps coming out and everything just turning brownish with algae, i can blow it of and its fine. Also noticed that more algae has been growing on my glass since i changed out the GFO. I had the flow a little high on the reactor so i turned it down to how it was before and the glass algae seems to be calming down. All my readings are pretty good.

NO3 1ppm
PO4 .004
Alk 10 as of last week. trying to get it back down to 9.5 slowly.
Ca. 420
MG 1400

Only 2 things i have done was about 3 weeks ago i changed out the GFO and turned it up a bit on the flow. i have since this last week turned down the flow.

Last week on monday i brought the lights 2 inches closer to the water.

Other than that i have been feeding difrent food, some of the samples from RAP. but i dont over feed.

I turned my lights down a bit on the dimmers yesterday to see if this was the issue. i know i have some deep water corals up higher and those might be the ones burning.

Anyways what do you guys think it is ??/ if it was to much light wont the coral tips bleach not brown ??

Burning tips can be from multiple causes. Alk swings and high alk with low nutrients are typically the most likely culprits. If you are running super low nutrients ( and if your measurements are accurate then you are), alk recommended no higher than 9. Common goals for nitrates is 10 ppm and phosphates around .04 ppm or slightly less. Every tank has its sweet spot though so it could be higher or lower depending.

according to the Red sea test kit i should be aiming for 2 ppm nitrate, according to there test im at 1 - 2 ppm, my tank is a mixed reef so i feed the corals also, im thinking maybe i went a bit to high on Alk, i was down at about 8 last month so i started adding a bit more on my alk 2 part to get it up closer to 9 i guess i should have tested a bit more couse i was slightly over 10 last friday. So since then iv been only adding the usual amount and testing. Hopefully everything pans out then i can turn the lights back to 100%

I killed my sps on a pretty gnarly alk swing. Be careful and test, check and double check.

Sounds like your alk has been up and down a little bit. I would bet that is the issue. Considering your nutrients are more on the low side I would target alk 8-8.2. Higher the alk the less room for error. If my alk gets above 8.5 on my low nutrient system some acros burn.
