This may be a dumb question but i am wanting to put hermits in my 55 can you take them straight from the ocean and put in a tnk? will they survive? will it hurt the tank? this would not be my show tank just a quarantine tank and cycling tank.
I am also wondering about rocks from the ocean

will the hermits survive-yes.
is the local rock beneficial to our reef tanks-no. it is not made of the same pH boosting material that LR from reef sources is made of.
is it legal to take hermits and rock from local waters without permits-no.

As mentioned above, anything you find at the beach is happy and healthy in much cooler waters than the average aquarium. You are asking for problems with hitch-hikers, the crabs would be unknown potentially harmful species, and there is a very good chance you could be bringing in bacteria that you don't want.

Visit any good LFS or look online and you can get some cool looking hermit crabs for a few dollars a piece and not have to worry about any of that; in this case I would suggest that you spend the cash up front and avoid headaches later.
