Are you planning on removing the refugium ? I don’t see the need to have both.

I just installed a diy algae scrubber if I can call it that but it’s helped with my GHA problem. Manual removal, scrubber, hermit crab and problem solved

Refugiums and algae scrubbers will only do so much in regards to reducing nutrients and controlling algae in the display. To be really effective, they need to be sized appropriately to the bio load of the system. Just pick one or the other, whatever is easier on you for maintenance or what you’re willing to do to care for it. I treat them as a way to introduce micro fauna to the display, help with pH dips at night and removing organics.

An ATS can be much more effective the a refugium, especially for the space required. I have a 3 sheet one in corporated into my overflow. It takes no addtional space and is easily tuned by changing the light schedule.
