I was excited to pick up a red flame hawkfish from a fellow reefer. Little did I know the guy was a jumper. He must have done a backflip and landed behind my tank.

Good thing I was vigilant about it and discovered him lying on the hardwood floor. I didn't know how long he was there, but I picked him up and dropped him in my covered cube.

To make matters worse, my coral banded shrimp immediately picked on the half-dead fish and almost teared off the fish's fin had I not intervened. My wife made a fantastic suggestion to place the shrimp in the other tank. So the hawkfish was gonna rest in peace.

The little guy was a fighter. He breathed hard through his mouth visibly for a good 10 minutes. By the time I saw him no longer lying on his side, I waved my hand, and the guy jumped so fast like lightning behind the rockwork.

I guess all is fine now. Phew, I would have hated to see the little guy go like that.

I think they jump when spooked. The first day I got him, he was shy and didn't show much movement. But when transferred him from the tank, he got panicked with the net. I think as long as they're left alone, they're docile and keep to themselves. I'll check on him tonight to see if there's any injury.
