Spotlight Specials: Bubonic Jawbreaker Mushrooms

Starting this week, we at Reef Lounge USA will be showcasing a new, unique, or otherwise special coral from our shop here in Anaheim, CA every Monday! In these weekly Spotlight Specials. Also available in our blog page.

We will discuss the origins of the pieces, their husbandry, and other interesting details about the very best pieces in our collection. Items we discuss in these articles will be extremely limited in supply, as we often only have one or two on hand and no guarantees when they will be coming in again!

This week we are shining the spotlight on what we believe will be the next hot mushroom to hit the market, the Reef Lounge USA Bubonic Jawbreaker (Actinodiscus sp.)!

Hailing from Vietnam just as the original White Corals Jawbreaker did, the Bubonic Jawbreaker sports a dramatic green-on-black marbling that generally gets more intense with age. Each mushroom has a unique pattern that changes as they increase in size. Much like the original Jawbreakers these mushrooms reach a large size, over three inches in diameter and at that size are quite the showstopper!

As with other mushrooms lighting is fairly inconsequential with these corals, but care should be taken to acclimate them to more intensely lit tanks. It wouldn't be a bad a idea to start these mushrooms on the sand bed in a partially shaded area and then slowly move them out towards a more brightly lit permanent location in the display. Flow preference is also akin to other mushrooms, low and slow to avoid them jumping off of their mounts.

Having over a century worth of aquarium experience between us here at Reef Lounge, it is very rare that we come across something truly unique and special, and we feel that these mushrooms fit into that category without a doubt. Out of several large shipments from the same source we only managed to secure a handful of these mushrooms even after asking specifically for more of them.

We are only selling four at this time, hoping to begin propagating them to ensure there is a long term supply of these spectacular corallimorphs.

At this time we have the following mushrooms:

^
Mother Sized (3 on original colony rock): $400

^
Juvenile Sized (1/2): $100

^
Marbled (1): $150

^
Splattered (1): $150

Hey Wally, I still don't have my tank yet, but I will come by and take a look at the shrooms and dream a little.... I'm down to weeks before I get the tank...quick cycle and then I'm ready! : )
