great price, but no customer service when you need info on how to properly use the item purchased and or calibration tip and tricks . Support A Local Fish Store so that when you need help. When you buy / shop local and support your lfs they are able to keep their doors open to help you.

Normally I would agree with you, but many people can't afford to pay double for items like this.

this is a exspensive hobby and there are cost effective solution my friend but Amazon will not be able to inform you on these items as well as a LFS easy solution save up to purchase in the mean time use a hydrometer Dan its not so black and white , that's where the lfs steps in and is the grey Matter I have unused open (blister pack fail) Hydrometers for under 10.00 I even have one I can loan a customer til he saves up to purchase the refractometer. Amazon doesn't come near to any type of customer service like that or even care trust me when ever you don't feel like there are options remember your lfs and if they care and sell responsibly you will be taken care of and your best interest kept in high regard

I'm taking down my setup. I have a refractometer that I calibrated with RO once and used once. If you want it I'll give it to you for $30 if you pick it up here in Long Beach.

I would have PM the OP. No need to frustrate Robert, but I guess you are out so who gives a ... right!

$85 for a Refractometer? If it does not read the number out loud and work accurately, it should not be that much!

Why are Walmart and Costco doing so well? I am pretty sure it is because of the cost effective. Most of the shoppers are very hard to please nowadays; they won't pay $5 if they can get away with $2. It is tough, I know, but that is reality!

I sell marine depot's pro refractometer at my shop with a salifert calibration fluid. Sure it's pricey BUT the only reason why I DON'T stock CHEAPO refractometers is QUALITY. I went the cheapo route and bought off brand ones that I had to calibrate EVERY TIME. Ever since, I rather sell my customer products quality stuff ONCE then hear them complain to me about it later. Plus if the marine depot one turns of to be a lemon, I take it back and go yell at Marine Depot on behalf of the customer for a new one :p

Seriously, more expensive refractometer maybe inflated because of a middle man BUT most are better quality controlled for long term consistency. SO, if anyone buys a low end refractometer for $25 just save yourself the headache and but a 11.99 hydrometer 'cause its just as accurate and more consistent. I'm not trying to up-sale but speaking from actual experience. Buy it right the first time and ya don't have to pay twice

Also, calibrate with 35 ppt/ 1.026 salinity solution. If you do it with RO, your readings may just be as accurate as a hydrometer (+/- 1 )
