Today my wife calls me up at work around noon saying everything in the tank is dying. She says that my little clown is swimming very weird and frantically and that my larger clown and tang are being very sluggish at the top and all my anemones, toadstools, ect. are shriveled up and laying sideways. I asked her to check the sump and she said it was not cycling water. So i have her hook up an old pump and to do a 10g water change. Well tonight i get home and everything seems to be back to normal except my little clown was dead and the big one was hovering over it being very protective of it, kept attacking me when i tried removing the body.

So now I'm wondering if it was the return pump Failure or something else that killed my clown. Why would it only effect him so badly and not the other fish. I have noticed the little one has been really active the last 3 days swimming all over the place. Maybe something was wrong before and this was the final straw. My next problem is that this broke my daughters heart, she cried for an hour before she could muster up the courage to flush it (it was her fish that she fed and watched for hours everyday). I want to get her another clown but dont want to get another in there if something is wrong with the tank, also not sure how my other clown will take to a new one since he was paired with the deceased one. Im still new to this hobby so please let me know if I'm over thinking this. Could a return pump not working for half a day cause this? And why did only that fish turn pale and act so frantically while the others acted sluggish.

P.S will update with water test when i get it done in a bit. But i checked it 2 days ago and it was fine.

Its possible when the pump went out it was leaking stray voltage into the tank. Was the pump still humming just not pumping water by chance?

The pump is in the sump. Not main tank. And when my wife switched pumps everything came back to life after a couple hours. She said even the hermits and snails where at the bottom of the tank acting lifeless. But now everything is back to acting normal. My big clown is kinda sulking in the spot where the other clowns body was and is not letting anything near that spot, but otherwise he seems fine.

Good point hahaha hmmm i feel like a powerhead in the tank should have been enough for O2... but maybe with all the fish it wasnt. Usually when they are at the surface it means theres not enough o2.

Just looking at the angle you have the power head leads me to believe that if your main return died/stopped, then as mentioned above, the O2 levels probably played a part. Surface agitation and subsequently gas exchange can lead to fish dying quickly. James newtothis gave good suggestions about flow rates. Just make sure that you have good surface agitation no matter what to maintain good O2 levels.
If you were to aim that power head UP, as opposed to down, you may have avoided the catastrophe. Still not 100% conclusive, but IMO that played a major part when the main return died.

Well. I think a new pump and power head are my next purchase. Whats the best bang for the buck. Trying to keep this on my smoke free budget (quite smokeing a few months ago and now my cigarette money is my fishtank allotment a every month). Last week i was actually looking up powerheads and seen this jaboe or however its spelled, are they any good?

They work.... I am in the process of replacing all of mine... For a short term solution I would say go for the Jabeo's. I would however recommend the RW series over the WP's. Either can be had for relatively cheap.
