Just got a new Visio 60gal cube. Contemplating removing the top rim... I know some people remove the trim on their tanks but most of the info I can find is on smaller tanks (55gal and less). Curious if this would work or not on a 24x24x24 glass tank. I know the top edge is not polished but that's not a big deal to me. I'm more interested in the structural integrity of the tank.
Thoughts???

my tank is a rimless 24*24*20 50 gallon cube I wouldn't see much of a difference between the two... how thick is your glass?

I've gotten so many mixed answers on this, it's crazy! lol... (i've posted on other forums as well. So many different opinions.
Seems like many people are able to do this just fine without adding any braces. As long as it's the kind of trim I'm dealing with (plastic trim that's 4 separate pieces, just siliconed to the top of the tank).

I guess the only thing keeping me from trying it is that I don't know what it'll look like underneath and I'm also worried about not being able to put anything on top of the tank to keep "jumpers" in the tank.

Well not sure if this helps, but i derimmed the top rim off my 60 cube about a year ago. In my case, the rim came off in 4 parts none of the parts were siliconed together, they were just siliconed onto the glass. Like i said in MY CASE the rim was installed because they were too lazy to smooth out the glass, but who smooths glass which is going to be covered by a rim anyway.

Good to know. I have looked at my trim and it appears to be the same (4 separate pieces not siliconed together and just siliconed to the tank). This is kind of why I thought about this to begin with, I just can't imagine these 4 pieces of separate plastic are holding the tank together in any significant way.
Have you noticed any bowing in your tank? Also, do you have any pics of your rim now that you removed the trim? Thanks!

Did you end up de-rimming the tank? I've got the same dimensions and am thinking of doing it also. Any problems with sanding down the top edge?

I looked into this a while back too. According to Visio the top frame is not part of the structure so you can remove it. However as you already know the top of the glass is not polished, may have imperfections, or might not be flush where the pieces meet in the corners. Worst case scenario...you take it off carefully and find out that it's not to your likings. Re-silicone the frame back onto the tank and your back to square one.

Let us know what happens. Good luck with this.

FYI I decided to just leave it on and decorate it with the same material as the stand.
