so, i'm not real active, but should be..
long story short, I woke up to 100+ baby nems in my lagoon 25... they are still coming from some hold overs and a second spawn (30-40 flowers) (1 female)

NOW, my lagoon is now a flower factory, and I started an ADA 60 F.. kessil A160 w/controller

biggest ones are 1/4 inch at 9 weeks old

my lagoon now has 7 breeders with 8 more adults on the way, and 6 juveniles

Wow, that's pretty cool. How long were they in your tank before they spawned?

I started with 3 juveniles, 8 months later we had a spawn. we have one known female, but hopefully the newer additions will also have females.
my understanding that over 100 babys is pretty rare, so I feel fortunate! the lighting is right, and I feed them scallops or shrimp every 3 days (it's key I think)

yep, I will be selling them in about 6 months +/- as soon as they are past the "dime" size or at "quarter" size. I have 2 local shops interested, but I could give a hobbyist a great deal as opposed to selling wholesale.

I expect to have a more productive brood in January (a month after the winter solstice)

lol... yes, RFA's are male and female.. the only way to tell them apart is during spawning..
or in my case- I had 3 RFA's at the time and only one started spitting out Babys...
so, without out actually seeing the males broadcast sperm into the water, it's deductive...

out of the first 3, I may have another female that wasn't ready to "give it up" just yet, or, I may have 2 males..

also, the female will sting the piss out of the male when she is about to release pellets.. the green RFA next to her booked it all the way across the tank and wasted no time getting there.

Now, I currently have a newer flower snuggled up to the same female.. she has been spitting pellets for 2 weeks (the original fem). this leads me to believe the new one is also female.

but, in the long run, there are 2 ways to tell for sure

Thought that the female RFAs were also larger than the males.

maybe, but right now all of the "original" 3 are the same size.. and started out as the same size... so it is difficult to tell from that. also, there are a lot of "rumors" and little evidence or research done on these guys that really supports what I see going on in the tank. I am documenting everything I see, so at some point I may be able to write a comprehensive paper on reproduction.

also, these flowers are about 2" (myth- they need to be 3 to reproduce)
130+ babys from one flower/ one spawn (myth- 40 flowers born max)
flowers born with full color (myth- takes 2-3 weeks for color to appear)
flowers are spit out, land on the disc, and are usually deposited under the skirt by the female (Myth- flowers are born under the center of the foot and climb up to the surface)

other myths- flowers can be Hermaphrodites.. there is no biological study to support this
they can reproduce thru petal laceration- fact: kills the flower
they can clone themselves- nothing supports this statement

Flowers can also "hold" flowers thru the next spawn and release them with the next batch of newborn. this was also confirmed by another reefer.

another bit of interesting research: flowers do not have a genetic dominant gene.. what this means is you will get genetic variations from generations and not mother/father traits. this becomes significant when it seems like a good idea to buy Ultra breeding stock- and then being disappointed when you breed 1 ultra flower out of 100.

in my tank: 3-5% born are brown and have not shown any color after 2 months. some are now showing signs of blue- the rarest of colors (these also started out brown)
even rarer, I have 1 flower that is 75% green and 25%orange on the disc.. looks like is was cut out (no color blending)

that's about the start of it.. I know, long and drawn out

You should talk to Miguel organism about this. He has some first hand info and maybe you guys can compare notes.

Yeah they get waaaay bigger than the males. The best way I have found to distinguish females from males is that when the males has broadcasted his gamets the females stand at attention with their mouths open and tumble/gyrate. These Nems breed like clock work during the solstices and equinoxes at night so it's pretty easy to catch them breeding
