I want to gwt an rodi unit. I'm tired of hauling 15 gallons of water up the stairs every week. So my question is there a difference in units made for drinking and others made for reefing. Can I get one that does both.i only have a 25 gallon cube for now and do 5 gallon wc weekly but plan to upgrade to something around 60 in the next few months. Looking to spend 60 to 80 dollars. Not looking for the top of the line but something that gets the job done. Thanks in advance

Youre going to need something with 4 stages for a reef: sediment filter>carbon filter>membrane>Deionization resin. I don't know anything in the $80 range but this is probably one of the best deals you'll find http://spectrapure.com/Refurbished-90-GPD-RODI-System comes with a $60 membrane that you wouldn't need to replace for several years assuming you stick with the 60g or less you plan to upgrade to. Then when you need to replace the DI; i'd recommend a refillable cartridge and purchase resin separately; It save about $10 each time vs buying a premade DI cartridge.

You can use same system for both but there are some added costs for parts you would need. The drinking water section would be T'd in after the membrane before the DI. You would need a presurized storage tank, 1 way.valve, and a small drinking water faucet. Your unit would also need a auto shut off installed.

I made my own RODI system pretty much. I just got used housings from Craigslist and bought whatever filters I wanted on Amazon. I don't think the housings matter at all. I think what is most important is choosing the best filters for your application and capacity.

I have 0.5 sed -> 0.5 Carbon -> 0.5 Carbon - 100gpd RO membrane -> Color Channing DI

My next plan is to get another 100 Gpd RO housing/membrane and wire it into the waste line of the first RO membrane so I can get an efficient product:waste ratio. Essentially it'll be 200 gpd.. Hopefully lol. I hate wasting water/things.

I also bought a flow restrictor from MD for 2 bucks will call.

Edit: To answer your question: I'm using regular RO units for drinking + DI housing to get 0 tds. Right now it's at 6-7 tds post RO membrane(wish it was lower :( ) and 0 tds post DI. All together cost me around 60 dollars? Maybe few dollars less.

Try craiglisting "reverse osmosis" and I'm sure you'll find some housings you can put together.

Hope this helps!

How much would the most inexpensive system that works for my reef tank and drinking water be?
