My heater killed all my fish :/ including 2 cleaner shrimp , 2 mocha storms and some chromis .
Luckily the few corals i had are still alive. Really devastating. What can i use to prevent heater nukes?

That sucks, sorry to hear. Do you use a heater controller or was this a glass heater that broke?

With how cheap heaters are compared to everything else that goes into our aquariums, I would recommend replacing your heater at least every two years. That’s usually my protocol with just about anything inexpensive, ato sensors, heaters, test kits, power heads etc..

I really like the innovate Marine universal controller. I use them for both of my systems and they work great. Easy to calibrate and have been reliable. I double check calibration about every 6 months and they’re doing a great job. I tried ink bird in the past and it fluctuated way too much for my liking. My son is using my old Ranco and it’s working great, probably the best piece of gear for the money.

A secondary controller like Inkbird is a good idea BUT don't count on that alone. I had an Inkbird screw up and devastate a tank. Try using two heaters, both small enough so if one goes full throttle it won't be able to get too hot.

i was without an inkbird, my heater failed on a super cold night. Everything but one clown gone... super cold water, low 60's. I was recommended an Inkbird by Jason @ellis aquatics. Glad i at least have that now, works like a charm,

I still run 2 eheim jager glass heaters. I guess they are not that popular anymore, they are huge but I've always used them before. I control it off the ranco controller. The ranco is plugged into my APEX.

Rancho controllers are industrial tempature controllers and are super reliable. Much more so than Inkbirds have proven to be.
I agree guys! I did a lot of research before choosing a temp controller outside of my Apex and found that the Ranco (food grade temp controller) is superior over Inkbird. I'm referring to the experiences that others have had, kind of like you guys. I read a ton, I just kept reading and was convinced that Ranco would be the best choice. It's working great so far. Of course, I plug in the Ranco into the Apex then plug in the heater into the Ranco, then finally, set Ranco at .5 degrees higher than the Apex :)

I would trust the Rancho above the Apex. I think you have increased the likly hood of a failure based on my Apex experiance. In your situation I would use 2 smaller heaters. One on each controller. Set one a bit lower than the other. That way the are not both switching on and off all the time. The one set higher will come on most of the timen while the second will only come on when the first fails or your tank needs more heat than the first is capable of handling. That is how I have mine set up, except I have 2 heaters on each controller.

Unfortunately you have learned a valuable lesson like a lot of use have. Going cheap when trying to keep animals alive is not always a great idea. Here’s how I look at this. Would I have thousands dollars in fish and corals lives depend on a $20 piece of equipment.
I myself use an apex to control all most my entire system. I also have an old apex as a backup in case my apex goes out. I also have my apex hardlined to my router as I don’t trust the WiFi connection.
There is a reason controllers are so expensive because just like divorce they are worth it.

Controllers are the prenup to power outages. You keep the coral and fish when the power decides to leave
