I'm thinkin I'd like to get a head start on my transfer Saturday.
Is is safe to rinse new DRY sand w tap water.. Then drain it and add rodi to cover and let it sit outside a couple days ( maybe 4-5)
Or will the heat make it grow algae etc?
Trying to avoid having the extra pita of rinsing it ( over and over ugh) at the time of setup. I'll be busy enough w the transfer ..
Any input?
TIA

Hmmm. I've never stored sand while submerged in water. The sand at the bottom would end up turning dark, but I guess that would be with live sand. Me personally, I would just rinse then use

I would think if you don't rinse it with RODI multiple times then there could be things left over from the tap water to inhibit algae growth

The reason I'm looking to do early is that it takes like a good 10 -15 rinses .. To get the milky color gone. I've got 120lbs of NEW dry sand to rinse.

What I did is rinse the sand in a bucket a little at a time with the hose. Once the water is clear I dump the sand on to a trash bag so it can dry out and then in to a clean dry bucket and repeat the process. No need to keep it wet.

Yeah but tap has silicas in it and stuff like that. You don't want brown sand do you ? I'm just saying what I would do. It's really up to you.

For my past 3 tanks, I've used new dry sand and rinsed with tap water out of garden hose then did final rinse with RO/DI with no issues.

no, no issues for me. After I did my final rinse, it sat in the tank with only what water was left in the bucket for few days before I filled my tank.

I did the same way as Mike and Bean many times. No issues. no way around rinsing the p1ss out of it unless you like cloudy tanks. Just give a good final rinse with RODI and you should be fine. What type of sand did you go with? I'm looking for new sand too.
