Hey guys I've been in his hobby for almost 4yrs but recently I ran into a new buddy and showed me a salt mix that makes 200g for about 20$ buck ... Now I've been thinking about it that what's better better and cheaper buying salt mix or buying the Catalina water witch is what I've been doing the whole time ...

From talking to a few people who changed salt mixes and had negative things happen in the tank, I personally have come to the conclusion that I won't change salt mixes if what I got works.

yeah i believe that you should stick to what you got it will cause a dramatic change in your tank unless you do like a drip drip drip to you tank so everything in it can get used to it. Think of it like you on earth and god suddenly throws you on the moon in 5 seconds you will die of shock and no air of course but if you knew ahead of time you would be getting a space suit!!! so basically your god of your tank you should be careful and drip acclimation all your corals and fish in a QT then empty your tank and fill it all up with your new saltmix water after mixing it of course DO NOT MIX IN TANK unless its a bare bottom

Catalina water is garbage IMO
high nutrients, and low major/trace elements
go with the mix I doubt catalina water will be cheaper than 20$ mix for 200g

plus the advantages of less algae and higher alk/ph

Most places that I've been sell both Catalina water and a salt mix such as Tropic Marin. From what I understand the Catalina water is fine for FOWLR tanks but if you have a reef tank you're better off with a good salt mix. Think about it though, if Tropic Marin is $1/gallon and you're talking $.10/gallon there must be quite a difference. I would guess that saving 90% would come at a risk. Besides, most "Catalina water" is about $.35-$.50/gallon which is still 3.5x what you're talking about.
