I mix my water and salt to temp with a pump circulating, but Ive read that you shouldn't add salt directly to tank. I've never seen the reasons why. Can anyone fill me in on this one? Thanks! Also, if someone has some bird's nests for sale please contact me. I'm in Los Angeles.

I dont think I have ever had a reason to add salt to my tank. Almost always the salt level will be high rather than low do to evaporation.

I don't. I pre-mix. But, I was wondering what would happen if you did. I have yet to see someone give the reason(s).
I would strongly suggest you use logic to approach this, I am not sure what you experience level is, but what do you think would happen if you did so. What would you common sense state?

If you have corals, the settling salt could land on the polyps and piss them off.

Theres no accurate way to truly make sure youre adding the correct amount. You could throw off salinity and ph etc etc

Well, at least thats my guess. Im new and I dont know crap.

When I did tank maintenance for large displays, we used to make a "salt slurry" that would have a concentrated mixture of salt that we would pour in while the hose ran fresh water into the display. You have to really mix the salt slurry up good and distribute it slowly but it work for the huge, fish only tanks(300-1000G). I would not recommend doing that with a reef. The salt could harm anything it lands on when it isn't dissolved.
