Meeting highlights that I noted:

Sanjay is very happy with his LED change

His growth seems to be slower but thill enough to satisfy him. Feels overall about 80% growth of MH

He is pleased with coral colors

His light program is 12p-6p 100% all colors, 6p-12p 100% all colors except royal blue reduced to 50%

His energy savings was all but none. His new lighting uses the same energy as the MH did, chiller energy savings was wiped out by increase energy from heaters.

He did not consider hybrid lighting because he would still have the added expense of bulb changes

The primary reason he changed to LED was to remove his chiller which was a point of catastrophic failure

Extra thing said to me after the meeting:

The vast majority of the leading LED brands he tested are good. (brands he specifically mentioned to me that he would be happy with based on his testing: AI, Ecotech, Kessil, Orphek, GHL). He did say there are others that would have been considered but without data he could not consider them.

The member turnover rate in SCMAS is the lowest he has ever seen across the country

He wants to return to speak to us again maybe around 2/2016

Wow thats interesting. He didnt save any on electricty because he has to run heaters more often because he ditched the chiller.
Not exactly, he has to run heaters more because he is not getting as much heat from the lighting.
Also his photo period was increased by 4 hours to compensate the lower output of the LED.

Dang 8 Radions seems like a a lot, but that's probably what he needs on a tank that size.
He said that to do it completely the way he wanted he would have 12 radions. Three rows of 4 and the front and back rows would b slightly angled towards the middle of the tank. Like how Dave toomanyfish did.

thanks for posting this

i hope some day he does a web site with visuals comparing how the same tank would look under different LEDs, like he did with MH, T5 and ballasts. Also, I hope he makes some comments about output intensity and spectrum changes/degradation as LEDs age because IME its a lot sooner and more like HIDs than the brand names say.

You're welcome! We talked about the degradation of LEDs and their lifespan. He feels that other components will fail before the actual LED does. He figured that most did quality lights will give you five years plus before possible failures.

Sanjay is data driven. He said that there is no data available at this time for us to determine how long these fixtures will actually last in a saltwater environment. He said that he thinks a well-built fixture will more than likely fail due to corrosion on the circuit board.

Did he discuss how well the digferent light spectrums between colors affect coloration and growth.
How well white blue and royals compare with fixtures with a full range colors?

Reason I ask is I'm debating on whether or not to upgrade my sol blues to the regular hydra.

He did say that most of the fixtures with the multicolors aren't needed. That the white LEDs in the fixtures have enough of the full spectrum to get the job done.
Sanjay did wish ecotech would make the fixtures with warn white instead of cool white.

I'm sure there are plenty of people that have had LEDs longer then I have, but my DIY LEDs lasted 2+ years with out a single led chip ever burning out...And that was with Chinese/bridgelux LEDs. I was actually really surprised, I figured after that long being in a canopy that close to salt water would def ruin the LEDs and/or the solder points. If they were gunna be ruined from the salt, I think 2 years would have done it. I bet people will see drivers go bad long before they start seeing LEDs fail.

I think having the power supplies/drivers separate makes a big difference. Some of the Chinese fixtures that have LEDs and drivers all in the fixture will probably be the ones to fail first. I had all my meanwell drivers sitting under my stand, and after 2+ years I had zero failures. I've actually reused all 7 of those drivers on my current led fixture. So im anxious to see how long before they start failing.
