Live rock in the refuge works also.
Yeah but it traps detritus specially since I don't run a filter sock. There is other media that works better since it doesn't have weird shapes as LR and is stackable.

Detritus is just invert food. I personally think adding more and more stuff into your system just over complicates it. My simp has a rubble zone, swap sand bed and yea I've got detritus but who doesn't.

lol I don't my skimmer picks up most of the stuff and I have a tunze moving the water. Whatever ends up not being pulled out goes on to my Fuge where the macro algae takes care of that. And have another pump in my return to make sure it doesn't settle. I do have some in my display at times but I need to add a new CUC so is an easy fix.

haha because I don't have much LR in my display. I like the open space. I added the rings to my overflow box so it worked out.

I think large systems with heavy loads will benefit although I just feel like lately people have been adding it thinking its necessary. Like someone else pointed out, zero'd nitrates don't result in happy corals.

Were you having algae or nitrate issues that normal maintenance wouldn't take care of?
Its not so much "normal maintenance" is because I have a shitload of fish lol I did get a crazy algae but happened after I added the algae scrubber I guess it was too much. Took that offline and added a seahare and now everything is good. Funny thing I never ever ever had cyano or bubble algae in my tank, only pest been aiptasia and just this year.

I think there's a resurgence of media because the hot ish is minimalistic scapes. Really shrinking down the amount of available biofiltration. I don't think I see many current scapes that go 1lb vs 1 gallon of water anymore. This is purely subjective but I tend to see a trend in these minimalistic reef scapes having more nuisance issues yet claiming good parameters. I think for these tanks adding media helps replace a missing component to balance the biofiltration in the tanks.

Yea it seams like allot of little trends like this are popping up. Sorry Zoarder, I am sure it works for your issues i've just learned in this hobby its best to keep it as simple as possable. Everytime I personaly try to add something to solve an issue it back fires and I have learned to fix the source of the issue vs just adding stuff. Now I will say I do run bio-pellets but I also run about 1/8-1/4 of the recomended amount and its more for me to have the flex ability if my schedule gets to busy to maintain my tank.

That's the beauty of this hobby no two tanks are the same. Some people like you use bio pellets, other use algea scrubber, chaeto reactor, NoPox... what ever works! Each person should know their tank and see what works and what doesn't. But I agree sometimes it does backfire.

That 1 lb per gallon rule was just that, a guess.

These medias have been around a long time, and minimalist scapes have been around for quite a few years, but its a recent push by a lot of these companies like its some kind of new technology.

whats the difference from this stuff and zeo rocks?
They have the same denitrifying properties. The pore sizes on siporax is much smaller than zeo and cannot become clogged. Zeo is a natural product and due to it's larger pore sizes, it becomes clogged and shaking the rocks can no longer help. This is why you periodically must replace a portion of the zeo rocks.
