Planning my next build and wanted feedback in these two skimmers or if you recommend any others?

Not looking to spend over $600.. I know I can get BK or deltecs but as great as they are I feel it's too much for me to spend. Weekly water changes are better. 👍

I love my aquamaxx co3 is very consistent, I don't have to adjusted it just keep working, for me so far is the easiest and most efficient skimmer I had, and I changed skimmers 3 times already in 2 years, And I have lots and lots of fishies on that tank, and keep my water and glass clean,my best skimmer ever, I'm actually going to buy one more for my other tank.just my 2 cents. Good luck with your new build. :)

I heard the sicce pumps they use suck and break easily. Thoughts on this?

SICCE
THREE of the Sicce pumps that came with my aquarium have failed within two years. Worse yet, Sicce failed to warranty them.
A call to their rep only resulted in me having to pay full retail for new replacements....so far the replacements are working

AQUAMAXX
I have an Aquamaxx EM600 (with dual Sicce pumps) one of the largest and most expensive protein skimmers in their lineup.
1) The skimmer has never produced anything better than urine-colored skimmate regardless of how it is adjusted
2) Both Sicce pumps refuse to start after a shutdown or power failure....the impellers simply cavitate making a loud clacking sound.
the only way I am able to get them to restart is to block the intake so as to create enough back pressure to get the impellers moving again.
3) The Sicce pumps are energy hogs. I have resorted to shutting the small pump down entirely. Performance (or lack thereof) is practically the same.

Conclusion: My old Euroreef Skimmer from 10 yers ago performed better. I wish I hadn't sold it now. Waiting and Saving for a bubbleking.....someday

Do you guys mind sharing some photos of your Aquamaxx in action?
If mine is not performing as it should then I'd like to explore why.

I have a curve 9 that pulls some serious muck out of the water on my 180. It doesn't like a deep water line though, mines running in 7-8" deep. Adjustment is sensitive, but once set I haven't touch it in months.

I loved my aquamaxx coneS. It was a small one with the shark pump. Quiet and performed great but some of the pieces seems very fragile. The cup was also covered in spider cracks for whatever reason.

I'd go BM between the two.

Yeah I have a Curve 5 currently for my 100 and it works awesome. But debating whether to stay with BM or go to Aquamaxx as I've heard good things as well..

In their defense, nearly all the manufacturers are going to imported extruded acrylics to stay price competitive. That honestly does not concern me given a protein skimmer is completely static in service (it doesn't have to be transported and/or used in a physical operation such as a tool)
I don't care about aesthetics, but I DO need the darn thing to perform as it was designed for!

My em600 has shark pumps. Are those Sicce pumps?

Mine worked too good. I had to downgrade. While I have lots of water volume, I only had fish in my display so it was not enough poop.

It was cheaper to downgrade the skimmer than to spend over $1000 in fish to meet the demands of the skimmer. (I can't just put fish in there for the sake of poop, I have to like the fish. And sucks I like too many expensive ones)

Yea, mine has Sicce pumps (5.0 and 3.0 if I remember correctly)
I likely have an earlier version because mine was a trade for a booth scenario.
Perhaps if I switch to the shark pumps it would make a difference.
There must be a logical reason why the manufacturer made the switch.
so....

Thank you for the followup!

BTW, I can fix your lack of fish dilemma if you wanna sponsor the children's touch tank for one show : )

So just did some research and the shark pumps are made by SICCE.. haha
You will find that Sicce makes various pumps of their own, and motor blocks for many other companies pumps and branded products. My ATB has a Sicce pump and its awesome. I haven't cleaned it in 3 years maybe?

Sometimes skimmers just aren't the right fit for a certain system, the water level, bio load, etc all play factors in why some don't skim well.

Definitely don't go with an SWC.

Marine Depot has great customer service, and the CO series skimmers get great reviews so you can't go wrong with that purchase at that price point.

**Oh and is there a Curve 8?

One thing I have found is Germans underrate the crap out their skimmers while everyone else overrates. Vertex, Deltec and Nyos pull in a ridiculous amount of air for their advertised size. Those would be my top 3 in no particular order.
