I have a Skimz and its a great skimmer. The 1st gen pump was crap but, the current one I have had for 2yrs is great. Its compact, easily adjustable and I love the DC pump. If you need pics of the nog it pulls I would be happy to supply them.
I've never owned an Aquamaxx skimmer but, I know someone who got one with a defective pump, bad seams and I believe the bubble plate had issues. Not sure if I would go that route. If you order from Marine Depot I woudl give them a call and ask if they have a lot of issues with the new version of Aquamaxx.
People are usually fanboys of whatever skimmer they have. If I could do it over again, I would probably go Deltec or ATB.

The very first shipment of Q-2 and Q-3 skimmers from June, 2015 did have issues with loose bubble plates. There were also about 3-4 skimmers out of a couple of hundred with seam issues. However, every single skimmer with issues was taken care of and tooling issues were corrected. There has been no problems since. We work very closely with AquaMaxx to resolve problems quickly and fortunately issues are rare.
As for the pump, AquaMaxx uses modified Sicce pumps so they have one of the lowest defect rates. Additionally, the modifications (especially with the higher-performance needlewheel) really helps to boost the performance of the skimmer. There is a pretty significance between a skimmer running a regular Sicce PSK pump and one running a modified AquaMaxx Shark pump
