What type of starfish? Linkia stars, for instance, don't live long in captivity. Sand Sifting Stars can quickly deplete the sand bed of life and starve and disintegrate.

High phosphates and nitrates are likely to cause problems with your SPS if your cal, alk, and mag is stable.
