Anyone keep a sump outside the house? Was thinking of plumbing it through wall into a sump inside a large rubbermaid deck box. What do I need to consider regarding heating and cooling? Living now in Manhattan beach area where outside temp is low 80's in summer but dips into 50-60's in winter. Was thinking of insulating the deck box but don't know that will be enough. Goal is to make inside house as quiet as possible and simplify tank maintenance.

Any advice?

Can you insulate the Rubbermaid? Might help.

I've seen a few tanks where they are either outside or the sump is outside. It gets expensive with a big heater and big chiller but like nick said, that would solve the problem.

The concern I see is dirt. dirt gets everywhere and will get inside. It gets to be a pain to keep it out and with so much insulation you get tired of it. Everyone knows that the harder it is to access something the less things will get done on your tank.

Depending how far you are from the beach, I would think heating the water will be more of a problem than trying to keep it cool.

I've got two large sumps outside. Just set them up for about a month now. Highest my temp got was 82 without chiller. The heater right now barely kicks on. I live more inland than you so I doubt your temp will swing that high but it it also depends on direct sunlight and how air flows in your yard. I'd just insulate as much as you can and it will be fine. I've got about 600 gallons circulating so I think that helps keep temps from fluctuating so much. Nice thing about having the sumps outside is that there's no premium for space and noise is minimal. It's also easier for me to do maintenance. I have not put foam board around the sumps for added insulation which will help.

I have 360 gal sump outside under the patio. Water changes are a breeze . Mangroves do better in natural light. When I had a skimmer, it was easy to get at and clean. Less noise inside the house. less heat inside the house with the chiller outside. If you go with an outside sump, monitor your temps or keep heaters and chiller hooked up for backup. My chiller has been coming on a lot recently because of the heat wave but usually in the summer it only come on periodically. Same with heaters in the winter. I would think living at the beach, you would not have to use a chiller.
