I currently have a 120 gal corner tank established for 5+ years. New week I am replacing with a 120 gal standard rectangle tank. what do I do:

Do I use same sand?
Do I use same water?
Do I use same rocks?

if yes to all...do I put fish and coral into new tank same day?

Please advise...

I understood that once you stir your sand around that releases all the bad stuff trapped underneath or in the sand? Will my fish and corals be ok to introduce to new tank?

When I upgraded my 60g to a 100g. I transferred most of the live rocks and about 70-80% of the total water from from the old to a new one. I did not use the old sand.

that sounds logical...use most of you water and do not disturb sand and transfer rocks. How about you coral and fish did you have to wait for your tank to stabilize? Did you put your fish in 1st then coral later or visa versa?

I had both tanks running at the same time for about 4-5 weeks then transferred 1 fish at a time for every 3 days and the corals in last. Obviously, also testing for water parameter b4 transferring fish and coral to the new tank.

I don't have enough room to run both tanks, but I recently acquired a 20 gal Q Tank and maybe I can keep there. would fish and corals be ok in a plastic container? Ive seen that a powerhead has to go there for some type of flow.

thanks

When I consolidated two tanks from my office (I cancelled my lease) I moved from a 10 and a 30 to my 96 I used all my old rocks and new sand. I used the instant bacteria and put my fish in the same day (all fresh clean water and did a long acclimate). I had to get my tank out of the office that day, so there was no chance to take it slow. Everyone survived. I did do 5% water changes every day and saw a mini cycle.

Fish brought over:
Diamond Goby
4 clowns
1 tiny blue tang
yellow wrasse
2x cleaner shrimps
CUC

I have not done so by having fish and coral in the big plastic container. They would be fine for a short time with proper flow. Maybe someone whom went thru this process can provide more feedbacks from their experiences.

interesting...
so when you say instant bacteria you mean the bacteria from your rocks, correct? and when you say long acclimation, you mean 3,4 maybe 5 hours? and you put in new salt water and didn't use any of the sand, correct?

Don't use the old sand, use all the rock and don't let out of water for long time, like the other guys said there is a chance of mini cycle. Good luck!
