Which do you guys prefer? Please post up your experience with both. Ive always ran Metal Halides over my tanks but after seeing the incredible results some reefers are getting off of the ATI Powermodule fixture im starting to want T5's more and more. One for sure positive from running all T5's is the savings in electricity both from the fixture and also the low amount of heat they give off vs Metal Halides.

This is an article that's taken from Rimlessreef.com by SonnyX (He won tank of the month on RC with metal halides, now he swears by T5's)

The one thing with T5's is that they operate much differently then the sun or MH, which are both single point sources of light. In nature corals only receive 2-3 hours of direct intense lighting to any one side of the coral. With MH, even though it is hitting the coral longer then it would in nature, it is not as intense and only a small portion of the coral is exposed to the full power. With T5, the corals are fully exposed to intense light all around as opposed to a single direction. This is good because you tend to get fuller, and more even growth pattern. The bad side of this is the coral has a hard time coping with so much light attacking it from many angles.

In my opinion, the growth and coloration I am having with T5's is better then what I had with MH. After my new tank settled in the growth was as good and in some cases better then when I was operating 400W MH's.

Now, two things that I believe T5's have MH's beat on, without a doubt, are:

-Color Options

T5's have given me the EXACT color I have always been after. I can add as many blue bulbs as i would like, and I don't have to worry about diminished PAR as Grim has already pointed out. If I think the tank looks too blue, I can swap out a bulb for a white one and vice versa.

and.....

-Coral Placement

This, I believe is the greatest thing about T5's. In the past, with MH, I had to constantly move corals around so that they were DIRECTLY under the MH bulb. This became tedious and many of the corals on the outside of the bulb were always darker in color and lacked proper growth. This gave some of the corals a funny and unnatural looking growth pattern. Now, with T5 I can place my corals ANYWHERE across the tank with no worries. It makes my life easier and my corals happier.

At the end of the day if you are happy with what you are using then stick with it. I wanted a better way of growing and coloring my corals so T5 was the natural choice. After looking at the MANY T5 tanks in Europe I knew I had to have them.

So, after using T5's for an extended period of time now I don't think I could ever go back to MH.

The shimmer is nice and all, but I can never give up the color and growth patterns found in T5's.

Please discuss your experience!

I'm thinking of switching to t5 also since I only hear positive stuff about them...
My 2 T5's that im running on my tank which are ATI Blue Plus are ridiculously bright. I couldn't imagine how bright my tank would be if I added 6 more T5 bulbs to it!

I just wish T5's were cheaper. Metal Halide was the choice for me because its so cheap.

Metal Halide is the best....I have used T5 (Sunlight supply) but my SPS is not happy. I suggest if you use T5 you need to have at least 8 bulbs (54w) for your tank that lighting system having more power for you SPS. Try to get the ATI lighting fixture.

I have both and I see no different with the corals I have under them. I have a 8 foot frag tank and I have 8 bulb t-5 light on one side and a 250w MH on the other. I have more growth and better colors on my sps under the t-5's. I just recently replaced my MH with a 6 bulb t-5 light and I am looking to see how the sps will do with the t-5's.

I like MH for the shimmies, to me it's very natural seeing the light rays flicker with from the surface action.

T5 are just "flat" looking, eventhough they can be bright.

Perhaps a combo may be best.

i was planning on switching to t5 but im a lil bit hesitant to do so. Im actually thinking about switching because of electricity. Im running about 1650w for my sys and if i go with the 60" ati powermodule 10 bulbs thats only 800w for me. or i might try the 48" 10 bulb one. it all depends. regardless i will be saving at least $60-$70 a month on my electricity bill if i end up doing the switch. Why do u wanna switch though? r your sps not doing good?..........also my air conditioner for my house fights with my tank. Major heat issue in my house..

Brock, your corals look great. Very healthy!

What I really really like about T5's is the KZ fiji purple. I love how it makes the reds, pinks, and purples POP.

Just my opinion. Here are some suggestions:

Your 3x400w metal halides in spider reflectors is a waste of power. If you got high quality reflectors you only need 2 400w. You could go with 2 250w in lumenbrights (these reflectors are really bright) or whichever if you wanted since you've got Vho's. You would be seriously surprised by how big of difference a good reflector makes. You can find some used lumenarcs/lumenbrights/lumenmax cheap

You got 2 dart pumps running on your tank (1 for CL, 1 for reeflo skimmer). thats 150w each. 300 watts constantly running ALL the time! Both adding heat to your water. 1 dart has the nearly the same gph as a Vortec mp40 but saving 100w and no added heat and its random water movement.

Just some constructive criticism since you mentioned you've got some major heat issues. Also running your lights at night helps on energy bill since your charged less for not using during peak hours.

I dont have enough room for reflectors. I already have a hard time cleaning my tank with the spider reflectors. i actually use to have 250w but was never please. I also had good reflectors too. When i bought my 400w i saw an instant improvement on my corals.......i know its your opinion and i thank u for it too, but i just go by my experience with equipment and coral. I understand about the dart pump making heat but its necessary for the skimmer and the one for the closed loop I would only save $3 a month to do the switch. I'd rather stick with my close loop and not spend $3-$400 for the vortech. If i did the switch with my lights it would elimate my vho saving me already 400w alone. im thinking about buying it.....seeing how my corals react and if i dont like it in a month i would switch it back. I really dont care about the shimmering effect either with the metal halides. I have a heat problem in my house because of my chiller always running. My Mh regardless if it was 2 or 3 always warmed up my tank. I have notice though my chiller doesnt go on much when my halides are off. The main electricity problem im having is my chiller and me needing to blast the a/c to cool my house down.

Have you ever considered lumenbrights? You hang them very high above the water. 20" above the water to get best results, that would allow you to be able to work inside your tank. It also prevents heat from heating into your tank since its further up. Just a suggestion.

Check out this guys tank he has a very similar dimensions as yours. Run by ATI T5's

This is my favorite sps tank, guy name Iwan. A lot of people don't like this look in their corals though. Personally I do

here is his info. He's using all T5 ATI powermodule and its a 200g tank
