i don't think smaller tanks are any easier. The only thing easier about smaller tanks are the water changes. I do 5g on my 150 every week and thats probably less of a water change than most of you with smaller tanks.
you just have to simplify your maintenance. but a dozen chromis and/or smaller, easy to keep fish. feed pellets, get an auto feeder. I tell people all the time that if you do not automate or simplify your maintenance you will constantly be elbows in your tank. i don't run go, i don't run carbon, i don't have filter socks. I simplify my tank. i don't even clean my skimmer cup, i just empty it and put it back. The less you have to do the easier it is to enjoy your tank.
Your maintenance is all determined by your bioload and the type of fish you keep. I have about a 8 fish now and i feed once daily. some days i even skip feeding. I don't necessarily cut corners, I let my filtration do its job. Good skimmer, light feeding, biopellets, small but weekly water changes keep my tank looking clean, algae and cyan free.
