so im thinking of starting my tank over from square one with just the sand that is currently inside. im thinking of getting rid of all livestock and live rock, and draining water. at that time I want to fix the plumbing possibly remove miracle mud from fuge, and maybe new stand. what are your thoughts on leaving the sand in place while not disturbing it, I would only be moving the tank 2 feet from one wall to the other if I get a new stand. Im thinking of using dry rock after I add water back in.

If you're starting over, start with new sand as well. Any reason why you want to keep the old sand?

Sand is only 2-3months old. I've been busy with my parents properties so I haven't had time to maintain this tank. So I'm wanting to rid of everything and start over but trying to use old sand to help with seeding of new dry rock

Starting over isn't going to fix your lack of maintenance on the tank. I'd figure out a way to fix what you already have. Start being religious about water changes, figure out where you went wrong, and take small steps everyday to make the tank look better.

I run my tank with 1/2 of what I could for bio-load and can skip maintenance if I don't have the time without much in terms of impact. Maybe iff you cut down your bioload you should be able to get buy with a few less water changes/maintenance. less junk in the water (i.e. fish poop) less algae, etc.

my only live stock is a pair of clowns, yellow wrasse, sixline, watchman goby, firefish, and 2 shrimp. i was thinking of removing all fish and coral so i can clean up some aptasia and all the algea that started to all grow. in the process i was thinking of adding bio pellets to help with nitrates. in the past 2 weeks of biweekly 15g water changes my nitrates have not budged and in the past 4 days green hair algea and some diatoms and red slime have started to grow.

how big a tank? I'd suggest checking silicates and phosphates if you are getting diatoms...i had a problem with that for a while, changed all the filters on my RODI and put in some phasguard and bam, it cleared up quickly

Lot of ways to approach reefing, however since you asked, I think problem solving as frustrating as it is, nonetheless is a great teacher.

Figuring out gfo, carbon dosing, whatever you want to try to fix your problems, kind of helps give you an appreciation how to problem solve along the way.

Of course, waiting is hard. Sometimes though, patience is the only real cure.

Good luck with whatever approach you choose.
