Question: I've been dealing with this bad plumbing since I bought the tank and tired of the filter sock not fitting well because of the odd drain pipe. So I was curious and moved these rock underneath the drain and floated filter media on top is this sufficient ??

I would just get rid of the rock. A quick fix would be to remove the pvc after your ball valve and replace with a 90, then extend it over with pvc pipe, then use another 90 and you done. That just what I see in the picture

So a 90 elbow right below the valve then another elbow down to my sock ?

It doesn't look like you'll have enough pipe to slip the 90 on, once its cut from the valve though. Looks like you got a decent skimmer, i'd just ditch the filter/rock all together.

Also is that salt creep all over the valve from splashing or from a leaky bulkhead? If you see salt creep up by the bulkhead you might as well replace it all while your at it.

Oh no salt creep is from bad piping above guy before me did it wrong put pvc on inside of larger pipe instead of around it so occasional drops get out while it drains. So the salt builds up. Not really willing to redo it sounds like a work there but the entry to sock I can fix. Skimmer works well tank is fine. Was just tired of redoing filter sock so I threw some extra rock from my tank in there. And have been using that cotton stuff for a while. I need something to catch the debris other than My two sponges above in overflow. I keep zoas and lps deal with algae on the zoas on occasion that's typically my only issue.

All that floss and rock rubble along with the sponges in the overflow are contributing to your problem. They trap detritus/debris/waste and turn into nitrate factories.

Those who swear by socks also change them out every 4-7 days. Unless you are pulling those sponges, filter floss and rock to syphon that area of your sump and rinse everything you're going to run into nutrient issues.

I currently have a sump with a built in sock. If I don't run one it's loud. I find socks to be a pain in my arse and wish my sump wasn't designed for one. I had better success in the past without them.

Hmm so I'm better off removing all of the above filters. Having no sock. Run the skimmer maybe add some chaeto and have the first section with nothing in it. Second chamber protein skimmer and find a way to seperate the chaeto from the skimmer and the third just the return

Sounds like you've got a lot of solid advice.

Last thing Id recommend is replacing the rock with a bio media like Siporax if you were really dead set on an area for biomass.

I think I'm just going to go with no media and throw some chaeto in there. Maybe run my reactor with some gfo later on.

I think that'll help you keep nutrients down big time. Syphon your overflow once in a while and do the majority of water changes syphoning detritus from the sump area.

Oh man, so cleaned it all out found most likely the main problem for all my nutrients I had two little bags of bio ball / tubes shoved down in my overflow that I didn't even know existed. I also had another bag of carbon that I have no idea how old it was but it was nasty. Threw everything out cleaned out the overflow and the drain section and it is all clean now. Also added this somewhat ghettttttooo refugium with caluerpa and a light off my desk haha!

Still kept some filter floss gonna change it every 3 days.
