The first two I bought only lasted a few months and I haven't tried another one in a few years. I just ordered one over the weekend to give them a second chance, hopefully with better results.

Probably isn't the best (or most economic) practice, but I usually just buy new heaters every winter and relegate the older ones to backup heaters.

On topic I've never experienced the issue the OPs heaters had.

Hmmm maybe yours is the newer style Via Aqua? This is the one I used for a year or so... not that long in the grand scheme of things I guess. But this is what mine looks like-

That is actually a good practice. I have swapped mine out every two years or so. I have run the eheim jager heaters for years.

Mine is the older style but new. Only used it for about a month these were bought a long time ago that I never used(stocked up). Regardless it's life span was 1 month . My apex saved me again with this heater.

I guess my only point was sometimes there is a reason they are re designed.. maybe that is a known problem with the older ones? Sorry to hear though... were you having any issues with your tank?
