My top 2 has nothing to do with purchases but I feel are the most important.

1.Patience
2.Knowledge(doing research, getting input from other hobbyists)
3.Lighting
4.Tank size( make sure you are set with a tank size you are happy with for YEARS.)
5a.Powerheads(flow)
5b.Filtration(it varies from skimmerless to a skimmer)

1. An open mind willing to do required and diligent research.
2. patience.....and more patience
3. A quality reef related message board
4. a tank that suits the needs of the already done research of what one will want to keep
5. quality lighting and equipment put together in a well planned system (regardless of the type of filtration chosen)

I feel these first 3 are HUGELY underrated and misunderstood. If one starts this hobby in their head (maybe even for months) with a decent grasp of what's ahead instead of at the LFS their journey will be that much smoother :)

In reality, if a freind said "I wanna start a SW tank or reef, what are the basic things that I need to get started?" I know what the the OP said, but someone new wouldnt know about LR and lights

Tank of course

In order of importance

1) Powerheads
2) Lighting (for reef, good lighting is a must, for fowlr not so much)
3) Some LR
4) Filtration (ideally a skimmer, but some get away with HOB PF and Canisters)
5) Patience

After these basic needs in an aquaria, then more can be added, ie; sump, return pumps, reactors, fuges, etc.
