My Tank Build

Hey guys, there has been a lot of talk about UV and OZONE. Can you guys explain to me the benefits of running these systems on a reef tank. What are the pro and cons:questionmark:

I picked up a Aqua Medic 36 W UV Filter, bnib off ebay for $50, (no one else put in a bid)

It is much bigger then i thought it would be. It about 18-20 inches long and about 4-5 inches in diameter.

It has 1-1/4 inch inlet / outlet, but has some multi sized nipple adapter thing that has to be used, that restricts the water down to about 3/8 inch, (the smalles nipple).

I was going to cut it off as I ended up using one inch pvc, (clear) (about 5 inches for vibration / motion isolation.

But, I forgot to cut it off, and glued the pipe on, (DUH OH!!!)

Oh, well, I guess it is okay, cause I think the specs call out for 300-500 gph, and that is easily achievable with 3/8

I have several questions though:

1. would it be better to have the water flow as slow as possible, maybe the bottom of the 300-500 range, (like 300 gph?) Or could i reduce the flow even more to cook off whatever uv is supposed to kill.

2. Is it bad to leave the UV on 24/7, or is it a waste or overkill?

3. What should I expect to notice now that I am using it? Will the water clarity improve? Will the water prameters change? Will I need to suppliment anything that is removed by the UV filter?

(that was a like four questions in one, but they were related...)

Is there anyone who is dimetrically opposed to UV filters, and why?

Thanks

bill
