this topic has come up several times recently--a quick search and you'll find most of our opinions. Run it all the time, 24/7. you'll need to change the bulb regularly. It won't kill your 'good' bacteria(common myth). You don't want to use one if you're dosing vodka. It'll raise your redox potential (good thing). It won't be a magic bullet against disease, but it'll help. You'll have crystal clear water. You can have a huge great pod population (I do). You want to use a lot more watts than they're rated for if you want parasite control. Slower flow is better to fight against parasites. I use a 25w lifeguard on my 40br and it's been wonderful.

I'm not sure if this will come up in a search as well but I have seen one more interesting than usual application, inline for the water being added for a water-change. I guess you never know what an LFS is doing/not doing in the back room where they prep the water.
