Mr. Saltwater is terrible. Watch the thread on the NEW 400 gallon tank he set up.

60 gallon sump. Paper Filters. G2 Skimmer. Tap water then add in salt mix with not even a water conditioner.

Then he makes a snarky comment when someone mentions TDS. "What do you think a bag of salt mix is? Solids getting ready to totally dissolve."

Pretty pathetic.

Just wondering why they get dislikes....seems like they're just trying to help out...
You must understand. These are the social misfits who got trash-canned, tripped, beat-up and/or otherwise bullied back in high school years.
Now via the anonymity of a keyboard and personal computer, they too get to act out their aggressions with little to fear from reprisal. Drama is their Juicy-cup and the World Wide Web is their playground.

I too have been a convenient target for the simple minded; every business owner goes through this. You learn very quickly to grow a tough skin and to remember the source of whos at the other end of that line. Many times its like arguing with a 12-year old. Bat the ball across the net and sure as heck theyll keep hitting the ball right back at you until their ears bleed, much like little ole, video-gamer-cocker-spaniels. LOL!

The hard part is having the discipline to pull away when you've got a troll cornered. they are SO fun to play with when that knuckle hair starts to stand on end! :a01:

I watch those videos and find them interesting to say the least......I know Vivid is way overpriced but we don't have to buy there...but you gotta admit that (if you've been to the store) his store is a real piece of work.....and I don't know if you guys know but his 800 gal crashed according to him like a month or two ago....

Mr Saltwater seems that he sells himself well to a lot of reefnoobs ....and he disabled the comments on his youtube.....maybe he was getting too many hate comments

The haters seem to know a lot about Vivid and Mr. Saltwater. Sometimes the worst publicity is the best. I am at Vivid religiously. Dave is a stand up guy and I gladly pay a little more for someone I respect. He stands behind his product as well.

If Vivid was in my backyard I would gladly support him by buying in store, instead I now go to Age of Aquariums and even that is 14 miles away! Other local stores just don't seem to enjoy carrying the more rare corals and fish.

vivid is no joke right door to me, but the only thing i buy from them is water, and thats only if my other LFS is closed. i am a strong believer in mom and pop shops, but vivid doesnt care to make a relationship with its customers. i dont mind driving to reef raft or CC, even tho there a good min away from me. when i go in and talk to tony, you feel welcomed and doesnt try to push you out or blow you off when you ask a question. i have bought two of mr.saltwater books, and i have to say i really didnt learn much from them. there is this one guy on youtube goes by the name newyork steelo ( something like that) who i mind very smart, and helps out in anyway that he can. i dont hate on them at all, just wish the ppl at vivid would be a lil more friendly.

ive never had a problem at vivid, they have a small section of really nice SPS and i always buy a couple frags. The first time i went with richard one of the employees helped us out, spent about 30-40 minutes with us and showed us the back grow out area. When ive gone back i have not really had VIP treatment, but they were busy and I didnt mind. I eventually got the frags I wanted, they also cut a milli once and a nice tenuis for me that they didnt have any frags of (colonies were not for sale).

Oh and they let us put RAP flyers on the sales counter without any fuss.

They definitely are not cheap though. $50 and up for the frags worth looking at

I, like many on this forum, have spent lots and lots of money at vivid. However, I stopped going when they lost my respect. Last time I was there earlier this year, I was about to pay and the guy in front of me simply asked Dave (owner) if he could get a discount on his fairly large order and Dave responded with "i have customers that spend $1000 on a daily basis and they don't ask for discounts. When you spend more than that, then maybe I'll give you a discount."

The customer just laughed it off even though Dave looked quite serious. I heard that and just walked out. Won't be going back to that place. Good customer service goes a long way in my book.

Have you actually watched a Mr. Saltwater video?

If you had, I'd guess you'd be less concerned trying to attack the credibility of people bringing blatant fuckups to the surface, and more worried that you're defending someone perpetuating malpractice in the hobby..

Vivid is a brand, it fills a high end niche so their prices are high end. Ive seen ferraris, lambos, porshes etc parked in front and I have many friends with professional degrees that have more money than time- they trust dave to maintain/stock noice tanks and he delivers. Not to offend people here, but there are people out there who want nice reefs & dont want to fuss over the details and are willing to spend top dolla with people like dave. He is in an enviable position and many stores/retailers know it.

Mr Saltwater tank on the other hand IMO targets noobs. His tank is noobish. Nothing wrong with that either. Imo he does give some questionable advice. All ive learned from his is my tank personslity is "irritable", possibly "skeptical", lol!
