Once a week for me, I tried bi-weekly, but I didn't like the way the tank looked overall. Smaller changes every week does the trick for me.

keep in mind that these recommendations are for normal maintenance. if you were to have a disaster of some sort or are battling something in your tank, larger water changes would have more effect in those scenarios.

I just started doing small, daily water changes. My system is 40 gallons and I do a gallon every day instead of 5 gallons once a week. So far so good, I like it because I'm not wrestling a 5 gallon jug around, I don't have to turn off my return pump, and best of all no parameter swings because the volume is so small.

Every day is a bit tedious though huh?

It would be if it was more than a gallon. It seriously takes 30 seconds. I go to the garage and fill a one gallon bottle with saltwater, grab an empty, siphon a gallon into empty from DT, dump new gallon in DT, done. I don't have to dick around with heating the water or worry about matching alk in my mix, so I probably save a little time in the end.

Granted...I don't have a heavy bioload at all. Mostly corals and the sps that I do keep are the easier to keep ones. I just make sure I dose Calc and Alk. I've been in this hobby since 1998 and have always done water changes the same way. If I had to do it every week I would probably quit as that is the worst part of the hobby.

This picture is probably 1 month old. Tank is about 80 gals with a 30 gal sump.

Thats a really nice looking tank. If its not broken why fix it, if those water changes work for you keep it up
