I'm finally gonna bite the bullet and get rid of crap all over my back patio! Want to build a mixing station in my garage . Gonna hook the rodi to my washing machine, running the drain into the washer drain. Gonna find 2 35/50 gallon drums to have rodi and salt mixed ready when needed.

Assuming u need to build an elevated platform for these in order to tap w spigot and fill 5 g jugs up. Has anyone made a platform this .. And have any advice/ suggestions on materials/ design?
TIA :)

J

Hey Jami. It's a little bit if an investment in time and money to build a mixing station but WAY worth it. I turn a few valves now and hardly lift a finger. No more back problems and lugging large ammounts of water back and forth. I built mine in my garage. Here's a photo. Ask my any questions and I'd be glad to answer :)

I will need to put both barrels on a stand , using a pump to transfer rodi to mixing barrel.. So I can have clearance to fill 5g jugs beneath the stand. Ill still need to lug the water inside for wc , but at least it will clear off my patio space outside lol my hubs can't stand the constant jugs/ tubs etc laying around all over the place :/

Jamie just get a big enough pump to pump your salt water into your tank. I think I have photos of my mixing station in my build thread. But I use a panworld pump to mix the water. Then I have a T with a ball valve and hose spigot. Attach a 100 foot hose to it and pump that **** right into my tank. Drain out the old stuff as I'm adding the new. Bing band bong.

I hooked my RODI unit on the wall of my garage near the front with the outside faucet. I run the input and output under the garage and the output gets moved around my front yard.

I use a 700gph pump and about 65' of 1/2" vinyl tubing. I can do a 40g change in about 20 minutes start to finish. I purchased a 3/4" tubing and pump to speed it up.

I use a remote control outlet for the pump. I space the wood on the top so water doesn't build up and rot the wood.

Wow! That looks intense! Lol
So...? Rodi from Right.. If you close ball valve C ,will pump into the left can? Is it fed by another pump inside the right can?or just gravity fed?

Only 1 pump in between the 2 brute cans. RODI in the square container to the brute on the right with float valve at the top of the brute.

Open B and F valve to pump RODI water to brute on the left, throw my salt in the left brute and tunze 6045 to mix the salt.
Open C and E valve to pump salt water from left brute to hose that runs through my wall into sump inside the house.
Open B and E valve to top off RODI water to tank.
Open A to fill up gallon of RODI water
Open D to fill up gallon of SW

Sorry for the delaied reply. Yes, it's plumbed through my house wall into my pantry and then into my living room. I use it to do my WC's. I use that common pipe coming into my house to pump out the old water from my sump and also feed the new water into my sump. I placed enough valves throuout to turn certain pipes off/on to direct the water the way I want. I plumbed a pipe behind that mixing station down my garage wall then through the stucco into my planter where I have a landscaping drain. This is where my old water gets fed to. It's sooooooo nice now. I literally don't have to carry ANY more water. Just turn valves and my pump on...after the water is mixed and heated. I hope this helps and if you ever wanted to come over and check it out I'd be glad to give you the tour :)

ps.the brute containers are not strapped down. The stand is bolted into my garage walls studs. Simple

Also if you add a couple float switches to your RO/DI container, it will self fill when you drain it down far enough and turn itself off when full. Plus if you are going to use a pump to move water from fresh to saltwater side, you might as well add a filling spout (just like Nick has outlined) so you don't need to rely on gravity fill, it's much faster.

So in talking ( ahem.. ahem ..) with the hubs.. I realize I will need to dumb this down and make it less "obscene" looking to start with .. as in i will be putting off doing any external plumbing etc until he warms up to having it in "his" space .. lmao
Am thinking I will just use a submersible pump and hose to transfer rodi to sw mixing can and then use same pump to try to do water changes to tank.I think it is his way of keeping it more easily mobile.. since it has to be in front of the water heater /furnace area in the garage , for lack of any space available. :fencing:
That being said.. I still do want to add low bulkheads and be able to gravity fill for ATO / nano water changes.. I assume I just drill a hole and add a bulkhead? use silicone or anything ?
Also.. since I intend to force this on him at some point.. what size bulkheads do you suggest for any future plumbing to be compatable? 1" is pretty widely used I think.. but wanted input :)

Maybe be a dumb question.. But what can u use to temporarily cap a street T fitting , ( slip) to allow me to build into this station and connect the barrels with a pump down the line? Something I can 'unplug' later on?

Just glue a section of pipe with a cap on there. You can cut it later and connect to the stub of pipe.

So.. Picked up some different barrels. Can see water level, so scrapped the external viewing tube idea.. Configured plumbing for eventual external pump assemble, but will old school it a bit using an internal pump and hose for transfer. Used uniseals for bottom drain and top fill ports. Using a 4x4 elevated stand , with a coat of killz and ready for paint , to help protect wood and purty it up a bit :)
Debating adding bottom braces to legs, but they are lag bolted into frame, so not sure I need it..
