What is the best way to test water parameters? I see some reefers like Bebo whom list exact numbers for their water parameters. Is it some kind of test kit? All I have found is the test kits that you add some chemical to your water and it turns a certain color. I want more accurate readings than the generalizations of these kits or test strips. Thanks.

any of the liquid test kits are just gonna be a change of color, but for calcium, alk, mg, you get a pretty accurate idea of what you have, even with the color change type. there are also pinpoint meters, but they are very expensive. my friend just got a calcium one, i have yet to play with it.

Thanks. Do most people on here use the test kits with the changing water color? I suppose its a good place to start and over time accumulate the fancy tools for more accurate measurements. Im just looking for a way to test my water parameters right now, Ive lost a few corals lately and hoping that my tank water is not some toxic sludge. I do water changes on average about three times a month.

I find the Salifert kits to be very easy to use. They have proven to be accurate as well when I have cross referenced my tests with others. I am not too concerned over actual levels from these kits as much as I am concerned about changes from test to test. I want my water parameters to be consistant, as well as in the proper range for the creatures inside.
